Hugh Laurie to step behind cameras when House ends

Hugh Laurie won't be seeking another on-air character when House ends, but he is keen to pursue writing and directing.

In another signal that the current season of House will almost surely be the last (and it was probably a bonus anyway), Hugh Laurie is already talking about his plans, post-show.

After such a memorable television character, he’s not looking for another on-air role.

“I think I have been rather spoiled here (in America),” he tells the Hollywood Reporter. “I can’t imagine there will be another one quite like this. … And I think I am extremely lucky to have had the one shot that I have had at it, and I wouldn’t go looking for lightning to strike twice.

“I think I will probably be as interested by either writing or producing or directing, or some other aspect,” he said. “I find the whole field of it fascinating.”

Of course he has already done all three before, including on A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

Only last month House was named by the Guinness Book of Records as the most popular show on TV, watched by 81.8 million people in 66 countries, and I would probably rate Dr. Gregory House as one of the defining TV characters of the last decade. He’s been nominated six times for an Emmy Lead Actor, but never won the thing. Tough gig…

For season after season, House was a license to print money on TEN.  But it’s time for the doc to hang up that stethoscope.

FOX is yet to make an announcement on a ninth season.

  1. I love Hugh Laurie (and Steven Fry) but surely his character was a rip-off of Scrubs Dr Cox?

I find it hilarious as both actors Fry and Laurie part ways from working together, they end up being so dominant in their ponds (Hugh is the biggest TV actor in America and Steven is pretty much Royal Family now with highly successful TV, film work and writing). Would be great if they teamed up again.

HL was interviewed on 7.30 Report last week, the interview of which, can be seen under ‘Recent Items’ for 23/11 on the link above.

  3. I wouldn’t object to more House, but happy to see it end on a high note rather than a whimper.
Also worth noting that there is still no official word on the fate of House as yet. This interview doesn’t mean it’s officially ending.
