As if there was any doubt…..
ITV has renewed hit period drama Downton Abbey for another 8 episodes. The third season following the Crawley family and their servants will be set in the early 1920s.
The second season set around World War I has its UK finale this weekend although there is a Christmas episode to follow next month. UK Television critics have commented the recent episodes were too far-fetched and fast-paced, but it has continued to pull good numbers with close to 10 million viewers for the latest instalment.
Creator Julian Fellowes said he was extremely grateful to ITV for committing to a third series.
“I have grown very fond of my Downton family and I certainly do not want to say goodbye to them quite yet,” he said.
The third series is expected to be screened in the UK next year, but Australian viewers will have to wait for season two, due to be shown by Seven in 2012.

@ Jack!: And many of those 22 episodes are filler. I’ve found that most U.S. serial dramas could be whittled down to a mere 8 episodes whilst retaining the elements most relevant to the series’ canon (coincidentally or not, that’s also the amount of episodes per season that would typically be written by the series creator(s)).
Season 2 has been really compelling … but the seasons are far too short! They are a bit lazy over there when most US shows have 22 eps and a lot more costly to create.
Im Still angry this was nominated in the ‘Mini-series’ catagory and Won…It is a TV series not a miniseries…..I’m glad it won but it was in the Wrong catagory.
I have been waiting to order the blu-ray next week, but does anyone know if the Christmas special is included or will be sold separately?
Silly Seven.
Seven could have been on the ball, shown season 2 and then at Christmas have something brand new for us to watch but nope. It looks like most of the Australian fanbase has seen it or is waiting to buy it.
Lol….pre-ordered Season 2 last night from Amazon UK. When will they learn? Haha.
Since it’s only 9 episodes, if 7 had fast tracked this in September, it would’ve probably decimated Underbelly.
Is anyone from channel 7 reading this?????
Perhaps they should!! LOL
Agree with all the comments so far. I’ll certainly be getting it through Amazon.uk also.
@melmac. Brilliant, Spooks 10 is out Nov.28 so I can order that and Downton and get free shipping! Well it is Christmas time.
I purchased season 2 on Amazon..can;t wait for Seven to show it in 2012
Brilliant shown loving season 2 and can’t wait for many more to come
So for less than 15 Pounds UK (+Post) I can get the whole series 2 to watch when I want with no ads, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm tough choice.
@chasingvegas Yep it’s going to make a nice chrissy pressie for my mum who will watch it and pass it on to my Aunts etc. Amazon UK are still doing free shipping for orders over £25 and I expect the price will drop quickly too, they had season 1 for $12.17 Aud the other day
Which 7 will show in 2020.
after the tennis!??
So when is 7 likely to show Series 2?
nice one melmac! no doubt Ch7 will wonder why it’s it doesn’t rate as well as season 1 & universal will also struggle to understand why the dvd sales will be down. It’s all due to the fact that a large portion of the 1.8m who tuned in for season 1 will purchase season 2 from amazon rather than wait for the DVD release here! when will they get the message?
The first season was similarly fast paced. The only thing that bothers me about that is nobody seems to age, and their lives seem to move glacially. Decisions can take two years to manifest. Seems a trifle unrealistic.
Great show, though.
It will pobably be renewed 4 times over before we get to see season 2 🙁 But thats ok because the season 2 bluray comes out on Amazon UK on Monday !!!
