Rumours afoot on more Downton Abbey

It's purely speculation at this stage, but could a seventh season of a much-loved drama be in the pipeline?

UK press are speculating on Downton Abbey season 7 reportedly being in the works.

Producers Carnival Films are currently locking down cast, according to reports.

While Daily Mail first speculated on a show return, Radio Times has also published the rumour -however Carnival Fims is yet to comment.

Previously chatting with Radio Times on the release of Downton Abbey: A New Era, star Hugh Bonneville revealed he “suspected” a return for a third movie was “probably not the case” …but no indication of a seventh season either way.

Downton Abbey screened from 2010 and concluded with season 6 in 2015, before expanding into two feature films.

  1. I think rather than create a story bringing everyone together, each episode could focus on where the characters have moved onto.
Would love to see Thomas move to London and dabble in the new world of his sexuality, Anna and John struggle with parenthood, Lady Edith crying all episode and Mr Carson & Mrs Hughes fighting about who controls the kitchen and house….then maybe bring them all together for one Christmas episode at the end.
    Would make scheduling easier

  2. I understand that TV networks are desperate for big hits and Downton Abbey was a huge success but we don’t always need to go back to the well.

I like the idea of a prequel centred around a young Dowager but casting would be difficult.

  3. The first film was OK but the second just milking it and not sure what a further series would add.

A prequel with the Dowager in her younger days set in the 19th century might have more mileage.

  4. This would be cool, but the ‘New Era’ recent movie established much of the characters severing ties with the household. And unless it’s a prequel, we won’t be seeing the Dowager, or if Fellowes uses copious flashback scenes.

    1. The first three season were a melodrama based around the survival and inheritance of the estate. Jessica Finley Brown and Dan Stevens were killed but the birth of George resolved all that. After that it became much more of a soap opera about Mary managing the estate and introducing pig farming, and Edith’s illegitimate daughter Marigold, Matthew’s mother remarrying, Bates facing the noose for a second time etc. New Ear only exited Barrow and The Dowager Countess. Tom marrying in to the aristocracy, Mosley’s proposal to Baxter, Carson starting raining Andy as the new Butler and the break down of Mary’s marriage — plenty left for a 7th season if people want to do it.
