So You Think You Can Dance -or not?

Could So You Think You Can Dance return to TV, this time on Nine?

According to News Limited there is a prospect of So You Think You Can Dance Australia returning to TV, not on TEN but Nine.

“I would love to see it back – I’ve spoken to (judge) Bonnie (Lythgoe) a few times and she’s also keen,” said former judge and current Celebrity Apprentice contender Jason Coleman.

US host Cat Deeley is even floated as a possible replacement for Natalie Bassingthwaighte, now entrenched on The X Factor.

Earlier in the year US producer Nigel Lythgoe said, “If the TEN Network don’t want it we’re going to have to take it off them and take it to Seven or Nine with another production company,” he said.

But don’t bet on it. Nine sources have played down the likelihood of this coming to fruition, when asked by TV Tonight today.

Complicating matters is the fact that TEN licensed the format rights in Australia for SYTYCD, not FremantleMedia Australia.

The US version currently plays on ELEVEN.

  1. @ steve sydney I agree, the moving of shows to a different timeslot (I thought it was Wednesdays for SYTYCD) Is one of the biggest issues of a show failing. Sunday night was where it rated well! It would be good if it was broguht back!

  2. The Aussie version was rubbish – everyone was either a “contemporary” dance or a “hip-hop” dancer… no friggin variety, and the onces that did other dances were booted off before the proper show started

  3. It’s interesting how TEN have been reviving shows that haven’t been on the air in over 20 years yet when it comes to a show like BB and possibly SYTYCD, shows that have only been off the air for 4 or 5 years, they loose them to Nine. Didn’t Lachlan say next year TEN are going to beat Nine in the demos? Not likely if this continues…

What killed it was putting on Thursday nights. Put it back on 7.30 Sundays after The Biggest Loser at 6.30 and then TEN might have decent numbers on a Sunday again. Bring it back… with new judges and a new host..

  4. Even if Nine did want it they cant afford it anyway with their massive debt. Ten is unlikely to air it anyway because of their already full schedule of reality tv gameshows with YTT and a new version of IAKO, how would ten find the money they too are in debt and cost cutting apparently. So i think unless Ten decides to sell the australian format rights to Seven or another Network Pay tv would be more like it then its a no go for SYTYCD.

  5. Roughly 2 months ago (can’t remember exactly when), TEN began airing those SYTYCD Aust. small ad’s (where you see a dancer, the name of the show, and the TEN logo) and then they suddenly disappeared. I asked TEN on their Facebook page about it returning and they said they had no news at that stage. So either TEN’s programming team screwed up by showing old ad’s, or they thought they would revive the series but had a change of heart. Hopefully it does go to another network as it is a terrific way of increasing the amount of Australians in the arts sector and to get us more on the map (which can be seen in the case of Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian or runner up Jessica Mauboy who have gone global and performed with some of the biggest artists in the world).

  6. just a question to the nine executives — do you actually have any original ideas? or are you so boring you have to take Ten’s old stuff? Big Brother, now Dance? Come On!!

  7. Bring it back but not on Nine maybe GO!. Nine will kill it but GO! wont if you get my drift. I don’t see TEN having it and Seven has Dancing With the Stars so maybe this is a digital channel show now. I mean it is possible. Why does it have to be on the main channel. This show could easily do 400k at least on a digital channel don’t you think?

  8. One problem was that the first Australian series of SYTYCD was exceptional. The likes of Graeme, Jack Chambers (sensational in Hairspray), Laura, Camilla, Rhiannon, Henry, Rhys, Stephanie, Kate, Courtney, Demi etc were an extraordinary bunch of talented dancers. Subsequent series didn’t live up to that lineup.

However, a few years have now passed and maybe there is some new, exciting talent waiting to be discovered? I’d like to think so. 🙂

  9. The problem I had with season three was the lack of excitement. I really stopped caring for the show after 2 seasons. And it didn’t help that all the contestants were so boring!

I don’t think I’d watch it if it ever returns
