TEN brings back 6pm bulletin

Updated: TEN will trim its 5pm local bulletins by thirty minutes and introduce a local half-hour bulletin from Monday.

TEN will trim its 5pm local bulletins by thirty minutes and introduce a half-hour bulletin from Monday.

It is yet another change to the networks’ News revamp.

The change takes effect in time with the summer ratings period -but will it continue when ratings resume?

TEN traditionally won the 5-6pm slot, but after Seven and Nine extended their 4:30pm bulletins and TEN added another thirty minutes the numbers began to drop.

Updated: 6pm bulletins will be Local not National. Apologies for this error.

  1. What happens at 5:30? Andrew Bolt? Heaven forbid! He’s already infiltrated the news service. Just another reason to go elsewhere! Sad to see a credible news program be decimated to this extent.

  2. If that many people are confused here……how are the general population going to figure it all out….
I gave up on TEN news a long time ago….could not handle Ron Wilsons replacement and why was he replaced?…..then recently Deb went……now only the great weather guy….guess he is looking over his shoulder also….
Old saying…If it aint broke…don’t fix it…..they did…and now it is very broken.

  3. They messed it up big time.Dumping the Simpsons for George Negus was the first mistake they made and dropping the family friendly shows that lead us into the 5pm News was the other(In the late Eighties 4:30pm was Double Dare Now in 2011 It’s Bold and the Beautiful Shame on them)

  4. Ten are so dumb. Just have Ten news 5-6, put The Project on 6-7. And then at 7pm they can have Biggest Loser/Masterchef/Renovators. It really is simple, but like I said Ten are dumb. Having those shows at 7 will help the ratings, The Block and Apprentice did huge figures at 7.

The other alternative is move news bulletin 5.30 until 6.30, and then a 1/2 hour of The Project. That would make more sense. People finish work at 5, news at 5.30 means people might actually get to watch it.

  5. They are obviously running out of ideas – and can’t come up with anything for the 6pm slot since the Simpsons was moved and the Bold and the Beautiful experiment failed last year… I don’t see why people who have been wathching 9 and 7 news @ 6 for years are going to change their habbits now – it’s not possible, they need to do something different

  6. So both TEN News at Five and TEN News at Six will be local, or just the 6pm? Adelaide’s TEN News has been divided into News at Five and News at Six lately anyway.

    1. Initial info seemed to suggest it was a national 6pm bulletin, hence the story. But this was incorrect. It appears to be an attempt to draw in new viewers who may think “oh I have missed the news at 5.” Or a strategy for OzTAM. Or both.

  7. Hardly a significant change… they’ve essentially been doing this since the 90 minute bulletins began. The last half hour from 6pm was pretty much a short-form summary of the previous hour anyway… may as well code it as such for ratings purposes…

  8. So if i read this right its still 90 mins of news and sport repeated weather broadcasts from bouncing Tim Bailey and comedy relief from from Sandra Sultry-Brewis Hyphen Westin and Brad McEwan , its now called News at Five and then News at Six , wow , bet they had a brain storm for that one.

  9. Make up your mind TEN…

It’s not difficult to see why they’ve done this. Previously TEN used to get around 900k viewers between 5-6pm. The amount of people switching off to either Seven or Nine at 6pm would have been a factor in the average settling down towards 500k as we see now…

  10. It should be presented by Sandra Sully with sport presented by Brad McEwan. Weather should either by presented by Sandra or have a local insert.
However, will it have a Perth-only edition at 9PM AEDT/ 8PM AEST like the new Weekend News?
Will the Weekend News be spilt in this way too?

  11. Why a 6pm national bulletin on weeknights? How will the transition from local to national edition look like? And will a special edition made for Perth viewers?
