TEN eyeing State of Origin bid

More speculation today that NRL rights will be targetted by all three commercial Free to Air networks, driving their value up.

More speculation today that NRL rights will be targetted by all three commercial Free to Air networks with TEN rumoured to be eyeing the State of Origin matches.

Those moves have been tipped ever since TEN ended its 10 year AFL deal. Their interest could also help drive up the asking price of the next broadcasting rights.

NRL chief executive David Gallop has previously said club matches, Test and Origin games could be sold separately.

Seven is also keen for NRL.

Last February Tim Worner, Seven’s Director of Programming & Production told TV Tonight, “I just think there’s so much that Seven could do with that sport.”

Nine has a first and last option on the next five-year deal.

  1. AS

7 didn’t fork out heap for AFL. The FTA part of the AFL bid was the same amount as last time.

7 also haven’t forked out big money for the Olympics like they have in the past seeing 9 did.

  2. Ch 7 already had problems scheduling the AFL and V8 Supercars so I cant see them being able to juggle the NRL matches on weekends when all 3 sports are on.

  3. Anyone but Nine would be awesome. And Ten would be absolutely perfect. They could use ONE to show games live in Adelaide. That’s all i want. Games to be shown live in Adelaide. Regular season and State of Origin, and finals, rather than this crap from Nine at 1.30 am. If Nien can’t show games live then stuff em.

  4. I think Seven will make a big play for State of Origin only. After forking out so much for the AFL rights, I can’t see them coming up with similar amounts of money for the NRL season.

State of Origin is three games with huge ratings that I’m sure they’d be able to find the money for.

  5. I don’t care if Channel 31 gets it, as long as league fans in Melbourne aren’t treated like we’re on another planet! We’d be better off living in Africa, at least then we could subscribe to the NRL TV online streaming service.

  6. As i mentioned this back in August this year that Lachlan Murdoch pulls the pin on the AFL in which he doesn’t like but will bid for next NRL tv rights. Funny that Murdochs excuse was that TEN has no money for next AFL rights.

Most Victorians / SA & Perth viewers don’t give a stuff about NRL anyway

  7. Having NRL for One exclusively, would massively boost that channel’s current poor ratings and ad revenue, but are Ten willing to pay the 9 figure sum required. Seven won’t even make money with the AFL, so they couldn’t afford it.

  8. Nine and TEN should join forces and steal away FOX’s dominance of the NRL. Nine does a fine job as it is, and I don’t think Seven would ever find the time to play both NRL and AFL…

  9. Everyone should read between the lines here – 7 / 10 aren’t really that interested in gettting the rights here – they’re interested in pushing Nine to the financial brink as everyone knows they will Never give up the rights to the NRL!

  10. When is it up for negotiation?

I’m with Dave, also – it would be a coup for Seven and an easy 50% audience share.

Those that get live AFL don’t usually get live NRL, and the same in reverse. So if, depending on region, one code on the main channel, the second on 7mate – both live?

    Whoa.

  11. See the thing here is, if the other networks bid above a certain % then Nine’s first and last rights get voided. Is that what i read right the other week? Either way i want Nine to be stripped of the rights and with the amount of debt they are in i would like to think that they can’t bid because of it. Who knows the banks might end up with control of Nine yet. The way they treat their viewers is a joke. They show 1 Live game a week and 2 on delay. This shouldn’t be happening. The AFL has been showing 3 games a week live on FTA and now its time the NRL has Live NRL matches on FTA on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Its what we want.

  12. I’d love for Ten to get the rights.

Seven could afford it too and it would be easy for them to have both NRL and AFL thanks to multichannels.

Most of the AFL will be shown on multichannels in Sydney and Brisbane so they could easily put NRL on the main channel.

  13. Regarding Channel 7’s commitment to “live” sport,
1.We promise not to do something nasty in your mouth.
2.The cheque is in the mail.
3…….and oh we really will do the best thing for the sport, true, honest injun cross our hearts and hope to die!

  14. If Seven had friday night NRL they would show it on the main channel in the northern states and on 7mate in the southern states. They would then do the reverse in the southern states with the AFL. They would probably get over 50% of the audience on a friday night with that line up.

  15. 7 will force the price up and Nine will have to choose to pay more if CVC can afford it (50:50) or Ten will overpay and start another tremendous downward spiral the Murdochs are known for (Packers too)

  16. Poor Channel 10, my first reaction to this was a LIz Taylorish reply of “Honey, you can’t afford me!!! ”
I’m happy with it anywhere but 7, they will wreck it somehow, they should stick to live entertainment and reality, it’s what they do best.

  17. i think the AFL rights holder…and the NRL rights should be with different Free to air networks… it will eleminate that conflict that Would be there with scheduling…. for either AFL or NRL to even entertain the ide of having both their games on the smae network…is marketing suicide….

  18. Seven wont get it I don’t see how they could.
    1. How would they actually be able to air games with all the AFL commitments
    2. It’s too much overhead sounds great whilst your winning but what happens when they start a downward slide as have so much invested in NRL and AFL.
