Seven tops Super Sunday, but there’s a New Girl on the block.

Seven's coverage of the Australian Open defeated TEN's Super Sunday launch by a big margin, but it wasn't all bad news for TEN.

Seven’s coverage of the Australian Open defeated TEN’s Super Sunday launch by a big margin, but it wasn’t all bad news for TEN.

Seven ran away with a 39.6% share over TEN’s 23.1% and Nine’s 21.1%. The ABC had to settle for 12.0% and SBS just 4.3%.

The tennis served up a big 1.6m viewers followed by Seven News on 1.46m. Seven will be grinning over thwarting TEN’s brash move to get the jump on new shows, especially given it was a first strike by former Seven exec James Warburton, now TEN’s CEO.

TEN followed with New Girl the surprisingly strongest of its new offerings at 1.27m followed by Homeland on 1.22m, Modern Family on 1.12m and Young Talent Time on 1.05m.

While the numbers may not have stacked up the way the network anticipated, landing over a million for them all is a good result. Lately many of its shows have been slipping under the 600,000 mark. Time zone differences with the live tennis will also have affected the final tally.

TEN’s chief programming officer, David Mott, said, “Despite going up against a one-off event like the Australian Open, last night’s YTT premiere certainly had everybody talking. Throughout the night the show dominated the social media space, with seven of the top 10 Twitter topics dedicated to all things Young Talent Time.”

But the Sunday start by The Project has a long way to go, just 392,000 viewers tuned in, lower than its TEN News lead in of 429,000.

TEN has strategically scheduled replays tomorrow night for Young Talent Time (8pm), New Girl (9pm) and Homeland (9:30pm).

The battle left Nine in third place with all of its shows under the 1 million mark. Nine News was its best performer on 905,000 followed by two Big Bang Theory episodes (721,000 / 715,000). A new 60 Minutes was crushed on 592,000. Nine’s primary share was a lowly 13.2% -it will be grateful for the extra multichannel boost.

The news was also glum for ABC1 with ABC News its best on 607,000 and a new Grand Designs on a disappointing 606,000 viewers. Zen was just 493,000.

Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta was 275,000 for SBS ONE.

  1. I’m surprised people persisted with the tennis .. it was obvious very early on thatTomic was no match for Federer and there wasn’t going to be a surprise ending. So I did as I intended, watched TEN and flipped over to the tennis in commercial breaks.

YTT and New Girl OK (way out of my demographic), Homeland was very good. Later I caught Jonathan Ross on ABC2, almost the same as the Graham Norton Show, so a good alternative. He had Emma Thompsona and Brooke Shields on.

  2. I did not watch TEN last night….but they certainly pulled eyes from the tennis….quite obvious from the ratings….may check out what I missed tonight.

  3. New Girl was pretty average. Zooey Deschanel on quirky girl autopilot.

    Homeland was amazing though. A-mazing.

Struggled to find all the positive comments mentioned on Twitter. Sure, it trended, but it’ll die a Ben Elton death if yesterday is to be believed.

The Project is just in the middle of being killed off, nothing to see there.

  4. See what this shows from TEN is that promotion pays off. You have to remember there have been eyeballs watching Eleven. So just because TEN isn’t rating well Eleven has the viewers it wants to lure to the screen. Last night proved you don’t need any lead in for a show to rate. The shows rated just a tad above what i thought especially Homeland. I thought only 900k would watch but the show has buzz so people tuned in. Good job TEN.

I didn’t like YTT last night. Rob Mills isn’t a good host and it just didn’t do anything for me. It was a nothing show. Compared to AGT and X Factor it doesn’t bring it. Sorry TEN but you won’t get me back as a viewer. For the rest of your lineup though if you don’t mess with it i’ll be watching. I love Modern Family and New Girl looks promising. Homeland was great too.

  5. Homeland top programming, kept my interest up all the way through. New Girl I will have to watch tonight, Had Dragons Den on ABC 2 going- dont know why I watch it, I find it compelling viewing- same as Alan Sugar The UK apprentice. Maybe because I have been in business myself and you can be uni educated, but it does not mean you have any common sense

  6. @Rick – 13.2% isn’t almost the same 19.4%. And given that Ten’s programs pushed the tennis down to third or lower in the demos – where the $ are – Warburton won’t be going anywhere.

Homeland was great despite a barely believable start.

Channel 9 got almost the same share as Channel 10 without all the mind numbing advertising and hype. YTT will only get lower as the weeks go by.
    ..

That’s only with Go and Gem. Without digitals it’s Ten – 19% Nine – 13%

  8. Good move by TEN to replay the shows. I missed most of New Girl as I watch Grand Design. I think the night was too busy as last week Grand Designs rated really well.

Now if only TEN could repeat Graham Norton, that’d make me very happy.

  9. Wow, all shows from 6.30-9.30 over the 1m mark, thats exeptional for TEN. All they have to do now is reinstate the old watermark. The mix of the new and old logo stylings is odd too.

  10. Watched most of YTT on timeshift for nostalgia’s sake…It was my fave program for many, many years.
However, found two things that really irked me. One was host Rob Mills’s silly multitude of faces and pretending to be a big kid, which Johnny Young never did. The second, the overpowering production values kind of took the focus away from the team and their talent.
One of the great things about the former YTT was that the kids’ talent was the “star” of the show. This time round it seems to be the glitz and glam of whiz bang screens and lights. Shame the kids were buried in technology. Hopefully next week they will shine more.
    And no, Chris, I didn’t watch Homeland…

  11. having had advertisement s for YTT rammed down my throat for the past 2 weeks on every addbreak at C10, there was absolutely no way I was going to watch it. New girl was ok….. not sure if I’ll go out of my way to watch it . Still (re)watched the excellent homeland.

  12. I enjoyed 10’s Super Sunday… however, I hated the very bad attempt at humor with Charlie and Dave Hughes… it was horrible. It made me like 10 less and never want to watch The Project again.

10 I like you when you are clever and witty (ie the ‘seriously good tv’ support group), not doing lame un-funny shameless cross-promotions like 7’s nauseating ‘lets hear from South Australia’s princes…’ all through the tennis.

  13. That is an awesome result for Ten, especially with being up against That tennis match.

Wouldn’t be so proud of the trending on Twitter when most of it wasn’t very positive for the most part.

  14. Channel 9 got almost the same share as Channel 10 without all the mind numbing advertising and hype. YTT will only get lower as the weeks go by.

    Warburton… you’re fired!

  15. Glad to hear Homeland will be replayed. With so much going on, my PVR ran out of space and cut off the last 15 mins.

I knew 60 minutes would be left for dead but not for a new episode Ouch. TEN should be pleased given they took out most of the demos last night. I don’t see how anyone could be surprised at numbers for The Project. Did they really expect a decent share going up against both 7 & 9 News on a Sunday no less?

  16. If 7 had normal programming, they would have been competing with 9 for 2nd place. Well done Ten. Hope this continues. Family friendly entertainment surely works.

  17. That’s a good start for Ten. Zen was soo boring – too slow for Sunday 830 unless it’s supposed to be tennis fodder, in which cast it really worked well!

  18. So YTT trended on Twitter but was it positive comments???
Get rid of The Project from Sunday nights, and put it on Mon-Fri 6.30-7.

I wanted to watch Federer v Tomic last night, but Roger Rasheed just kept talking and wouldn’t shut up so i ended up switching to watch Modern Family, New Girl & Homeland again. Seven get rid of Roger Rasheed so i can watch tennis.

  19. That’s actually a fantastic result for Homeland and New Girl. Especially for Homeland considering it’s not a newtwork TV show in the US. Will be interesting to see how it holds up next week.
