Shirley MacLaine to join Downton Abbey

Shirley MacLaine is joining the U.K. series as the American mother of Elizabeth McGovern.

Downton Abbey just got another marquee name for its third season.

Shirley MacLaine is joining the U.K. series to play Martha Levinson, the American mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern).

Carnival Films’ managing director Gareth Neame said, “My late grandfather directed Shirley MacLaine in Gambit in 1966 so it is a delight for me that she will be joining us on Downton Abbey.

“[Creator] Julian [Fellowes] has written another brilliant character in Martha Levinson, who will be a wonderful combatant for Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess and we are excited at the prospect of Shirley MacLaine playing her.”

You can say that again….

The third season is expected to premiere in the U.K. in September.

This year Seven will have the option of two Downton seasons plus one Christmas special -but so far no premiere date has been announced.

  1. Downton Abbey won’t be aired on Channel Seven until after Julian Fellowes’ four-part ‘Titanic’ television drama has aired. Once it has been aired, that’s when Channel Seven will swoop Downton Abbey onto our screens. Makes sense.

  2. nathanjamesmitchell +1

Seven has completely screwed this show by holding back from the viewers. Rating periods or non-rating periods, if there was ever a show that needed to be fast tracked, it was this one. I’d be surprised if they can get it all in the right order when they do decide to show it.

  3. season 3??..to be season 3 it would have to be a series???? really? I thought it was a mini series??? that’s what it is nominated for all the awards in America.
it won for ‘best mini-series” last year…does this mean it isnt and should give the award back…..Hell yes!

  4. @Maev….Sydney. If you view the Christmas Special before viewing Season 2 you may as well not bother watching S2. The Christmas Special (also known as S2 Epis 9) actually ties up the stories etc for the 2nd Season. Watching it first will only spoil it for you. 🙂

  5. Oh channel seven. You fools. Any Downton Abbey fan has realised they can go onto Amazon UK and buy Season 2 on DVD months ago for a very cheap price, instead of waiting for you to release an add-filled version at a time that suits you. Why you feel the need to withhold the show and release it at a point when everyone’e already seen it is beyond me. It will be your loss.

Looking forward to season 3 which I clearly won’t be able to watch on seven anytime soon.

  6. Season three in Sept…in the UK…and we have not even seen the Chrissy special yet….let alone series 2…..Bad Seven!
And we need to see the Christmas special first as it ties the two series together…apparently….as I have read from other posts in here…from folk who purchased them on DVD because they got sick of waiting….

  7. Really looking forward to Season 2. Hopefully it’s not too far away. I really didn’t think it would be my cup of tea but I got hooked from episode 1.

Can’t wait for this one to return.

  8. Great casting, can’t wait to see her and Maggie face off. Maybe in the next coming weeks they might be news that Harrison Ford is doing a guest spot, since he’s a fan of the show, one can dream though.
