Breakfast battle widens

While TEN has only just entered the breakfast television fray, Sunrise is enjoying bumper figures.

While TEN has only just entered the breakfast television fray as a dot on the horizon, Seven is enjoying bumper figures.

This week Sunrise has scored its best figures in a year, yesterday at 423,000 viewers, winning everywhere except Melbourne. Today was nearly 100,000 behind at 326,000. ABC News Breakfast on two channels was 39,000 / 24,000 and TEN’s Breakfast was 42,000. That Sunrise can increase it’s numbers with a third player in the market is impressive, if somewhat mystifying.

Thursday was a closer battle between Seven and Nine due to the final cricket battle.

Seven won the night with My Kitchen Rules at 1.8m viewers then Seven News (1.22m), Today Tonight (1.14m),  Home and Away (971,000), Grey’s Anatomy (772,000), Deal or No Deal (527,000), Desperate Housewives (520,000), Private Practice (296,000) and 30 Rock (97,000).

Nine News (1.13m) topped Nine while the final One Day Cricket scored well averaging 1.03m / 538,000. CSI Miami was 480,000 and NRL Footy Show was 420,000.

TEN had its best Thursday for 2012 thanks to a late addition of The Project Special: The Kony Phenomenon (647,000) -did anyone consider The Project as an 8pm not 6pm regular? Its best performer was The Biggest Loser (795,000). Elsewhere it was TEN News (680,000), Law and Order: SVU (588,000) and The Project (518,000).

ABC News (901,000) led ABC1 then 7:30 (523,000), Family Confidential (443,000). Sadly The Straits has dropped to 375,000 which does not reflect its bold storytelling.

The Spice Trail was 312,000 for SBS ONE, 24 Hours in Emergency was 271,000, Food Safari (206,000) and Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong was 184,000.

A Touch of Frost was 282,000 as the best on multichannels.

  1. I think Today got away with copying the Sunrise format but when they copied the set, well i think it just left everyone gobsmacked. I think people just think why watch it when you can have the original. Well done sunrise. You have been a market leader and innovator and you deserve to be rewarded with good ratings.

  2. Breakfast on Ten is certainly growing on me too.On the odd occasion that i can watch early morning tv i have found Tens new baby to be more interesting to watch and therefore i tend to watch it longer.Having actual discussions and not just 60-90 second segments on issues is refreshing and having a weather person with brains who actually knows what she is talking about and not some “himbo” makes for a wonderful change as well.

  3. Well I have been watching the Straits and really like it, it is not like Alcatraz which is very formula driven, same plot different characters. While I am on what is the reasoning behind 7TWO showing double episodes of Heartbeat Mondays and Wednesdays, it is getting too much. Dont get me wrong I love the show but you can have too much of a good thing.
Breakfast TV I am actually liking ABC News 24 breakfast, I was sick a couple of days and caught up with it , and I dont mind Breakfast on TEN and Sunrise, to me it is like a comfortable pair of slippers, you dont want a new pair!

  4. Again it just proves how wrong the Oz Tam ratings system works. Numbers plucked from thin air. good luck if you can make sense of the numbers. Breakfast is growing on me.

  5. rifraf, you’re probably pretty spot on with the overnight thing. There’s probably a very high percentage of Sunrise and Today viewers who simply hit the ‘on’ button while they’re doing stuff in the morning to get a bit of news in the background, not caring or even noticing what channel is on. So the bigger night each channel has, the bigger the following morning will be.

  6. This just proves one thing to me. Viewers tried Today but decided Sunrise was better and for them. All shows go through this sort of period but Sunrise has been great these past couple of months.

MKR is just a beast. Nothing can stop it. The cricket did well for 4 markets. As for The Project if this show was getting these figures at 8pm its still considered a flop. Sorry but this show has had enough chances. Time to move on about chances. It will stay at those figures and won’t really move.

  7. Andrew_83, in there defence, Sunrise have been including Nat and Mark in the show more for a long time… probably really starting mid way through last year with Nat presenting a lot of different segments. Either way, the show has seemed more fresh and well paced lately.

  8. I think The Straits is the best thing on TV at the moment. The mum and dad are two of the best actors you are likely to see on the small screen in Australia and I like that it’s not fitting a particular genre perfectly.

  9. Actually Breakfast is growing on me… Even though that little Kiwi guy still gives me the heebie-jeebies on occasion.

I think it’s because the show doesn’t take itself too seriously, whereas watching that clown Koch is like listening to your uncle-who-knows-everything. They’re definitely developing a ‘dynamic’ amongst the cast as well, which isn’t hurting viewability. They tend to separate news and general discussion too, whereas Sunrise seems to think it has to editorialise everything.

  10. “TEN’s Breakfast was 42,000. That Sunrise can increase it’s numbers with a third player in the market is impressive, if somewhat mystifying” Not that mystifying – 2 mil folks leaving it on 7 overnight will do that..
“did anyone consider The Project as an 8pm not 6pm regular?” I’ve heard that rumour, apparently they’re combining it with the Renovators and calling it “The Relocaters” a reality series that takes shitty time slots and tries to save them and the network…

  11. 10 could have The Project at 8pm for 30 mins every night and fill the 2 hours between 6pm and 8pm with daily repeats of The Devil wears Prada 😉

  12. It’s funny because Today got rid of the desk and used the couch and made it a joint show with all presenters as opposed to 2 hosts and then Sunrise went and did the same thing by involving Nat & Mark more and having them all in the same shot and it seemed to work for them I guess.

  13. Ive been watching sunrise a lot the past 2 weeks. It feels like a better show of late. I think Mel is a real asset.

I’ve heard all the excuses about breakfasts ratings. They are absolutely shocking. It’s only doing a bit better than toasted tv only costing millions more to air.
