Renewed: Fringe

Fringe has been renewed for a fifth and final season of 13 more episodes.

Fringe has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

FOX has renewed the series for 13 more episodes, taking the show to 100 episodes, a critical threshold for syndication.

Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television’s most imaginative dramas,” said FX entertainment chief Kevin Reilly. “Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve. The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it’s going to be a very exciting final chapter.”

Despite hitting ratings lows this year, Fringe has maintained a vocal fan base, and received two Emmy nominations in technical categories.

Reilly said in January that a renewal hinged on renegotiating the deal with producing studio Warner Bros TV and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot at a lower license fee. “We lose a lot of money on the show,” Reilly said. “We are not in the business of losing money, so we’re trying to figure out if there a number at which we can continue with the series.” After lengthy negotiations over the past couple of months, the two sides came to an agreement, giving the show and its fans a proper ending.

In anticipation of an official decision, the cast and crew shot multiple endings for the show’s two-part season finale, set to air in the US on May 11th.

At least it was a better outcome than the show simply being axed.

  1. I’m waiting, waiting, waiting for season 4 here in Australia, have just about given up hope 🙁

Ditto re typical Channel Nine – they desperately need ratings, but they constantly stuff around their viewers.

Will keep hoping they see sense! Thanks for giving me some hope I may see the final 2 seasons after all!

  2. Great news. Wonder if we’ll ever get season 4, let alone 5, here in Australia?

I see GO! still have the season 3 page up on their site. It’s like ten months since that finished, with no mention of whether or when we might expect season 4. Typical Nein, useless as always.

  3. Great show, thank god it’s getting a proper ending!

The thing is, is it because of the big hitters behind the show that they’re letting them finish it.

Or are they finally learning that cult shows have more value when they are finished properly.

It really is a great show that just got better and better.

Currently only seen up the end of season 3.

  4. Excellent news. Glad to know that my favourite show will have a proper ending. Extremely disappointed that Go! hasn’t shown it. Finally gave up and resorted to other means.

  5. Absolutely Fantastic !

Just sad it’s the Final 13

Great Scifi (and I use this loosely with Fringe) shows are few and far between these days

  6. Amazing that FOX and Warner could come to an arrangement on the licensing fee. This seasons ratings have been utterly abysmal so it was always a long shot, considering most shows only need about 88 episodes at the least for syndication rather than the traditional 100 and it will have reached it by the end of this current season.

Super happy to have a proper ending to one of my fave shows at the moment.

  7. Yipee! Thank you for this news. Joel Wyman only tweeted it an hour ago. I checked after I saw it from you. I’m very grateful for FOX and the WB for making this show possible. As well as the writers, actors and crew. I’m also grateful that GO! aired it both during prime time and repeats. I hope that means soon there will be announcement of when season 4 will air on a Wednesday.

But really thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To quote Walter, “How wonderful.”

  8. Good that it is going to get an ending, but when is GO! going to put a temporary stop to movies so it can show it again? Trying to figure out if I have to resort to other means in seeing this or Go will get themselves together soon.
