Gretel wishes the best for Big Brother

Gretel Killeen reckons Sonia Kruger will be a great host for Big Brother and wishes the show well.

The woman identified with the hit Reality series still believes in the concept, and for most Australians she defined the series with her lively hosting.

Writing in The Australian today she says, “Eleven years ago, yes that long ago, I hosted the first series of Big Brother on Australian TV. Tonight, a new series of BB begins on a different network with a different host in a different decade. I’m often asked how I think it will fare. Truth is, while I am occasionally psychic, my gift tends to be unreliable and often only retrospectively correct, so I have no choice but to guess.

“I choose to guess it will be a great success because BB is a strong format and Sonia Kruger will be a terrific host. I choose to be positive because I’m tired of Australians unhealthily wishing failure on one another in vacuous displays of schadenfreude, a possible ironic consequence of 11 years of reality TV colliding with a nation suffering low self-esteem.

“But what would I know? I come from a family that believed colour TV was a passing fad, and in the time that has passed since BB first hit our screens, both the world and this nation have changed.”

  1. What a waste of time piece the original article was. What did anyone assume she would say…that SK will crash and burn? That SK will be better than “I” (Gretel) ever was? The article said precisely what you’d expect it to say…reasonable grace and good wishes.

  2. When grettal did the opening shows of big brother on channel ten. there was alot more of her and when shes spoken. This year big brother returns but on channel 9 with a new host Sonia… notice lastnight show was very little spoken from sonias *mouth* but more of laughing and lots of silent moments in between.

There was far too much editing and far too much cuts on the last night recorded show. (considering its not live) it was filmed on sunday night before viewers like you get to see it 24hour later on television.

There was far too much edit cuts.. It felt like watching a (highlighted show). Preview years when channel ten did this.. it was run longer.. there was less edits and less cuts in between segments…. It almost felt like watching it like as if it was *live* but it wasn’t it was just a few hours recorded but what was good about was that there was less cut edit in between.

I wish grettal would had came back.. she did it better then what sonia really did lastnight show… sonia just lots of laughing and alittle imaturity as she dance around been stupid for someone whos well indeed older of age bracket. So lastnight show was too much editing and far less talks… just too much silents in between and too much laughing and too much edit cuts.

  3. I think it quite an interesting twist in the promos for Big Brother, from what I have seen so far the girls doing a face plant on the glass were obviously locked on the inside trying to get out.

  4. Sorry but nothing (i mean no-one) will ever beat Gretel with Big Brother. She is BB. Without her there isn’t BB in my opinion. I can’t stand Sonia and well as i will be recording it i will see what happens but it seems to me Nine are going to kill the show with all this family friendly talk.

  5. Hey Hoin, “we” didn’t all move on, a lot of us are still watching BB from overseas, the UKBB is about to finish after 3 months of fun and arguments.

  6. I for one am looking forward to BB and as I’ve said all along,as long as they have a good mix of people.
Also want to add(and I’ve said this many times before)that television is about entertainment and hopefully there is enough variety to keep everyone happy. If people don’t like one show, there’s plenty of other shows to watch.
One last thing,I’m going to be interested in seeing what kind of host Sonia Kruger is going to be.

  7. @Hoin im trying to work out what your name means or if i know you, as our view are different…and i think Gretel is right…Some Australians do have a habit of wishing failure on others.. I hope its successful as it is employing people i know who are passionate TV people… good luck guys on a successful serious…and like others have suggested Hoin…turn the TV over if you dont want to watch… and leave your negative comments somewhere else…

  8. I am a fan of Gretel – and loved her work on BB. She is great talent, but i think she wanted a long spell out of the spotlight after she quit the show.
She is gracious, eloquent and lots of fun. I wish she would pop up a little more often on panel shows.

  9. Gretel Killeen is the main reason I never watched Big Brother from 2001-2007, she never struck me as an attractive person and Ten always tried to make her look sexy in their promos. Massive marketing fail on their part

Anyway this show is no different to most of the reality shite on Nine’s schedule (The Block, The Voice, Bogan Wants a Wife) . I’m sure this show will be a massive success for Nein as Australia loves to lap up this lowest common denominator garbage

I’m not just saying this to bash Nine, I hated this show when it was on Ten as well. As for Seven I didn’t bother with The Amazing Race this year because of the constant timeslot changes and I’ll probably skip The X Factor this year

  10. This reminds me how great of a host Gretel was. I’m surprised she hasn’t been picked up by anyone else.

I’m excited by nine’s reboot of BB – surely they can’t do any worse than that abortion that was Kyle’s year.

It feels like it’s back as we’re getting the haters actually caring enough to hate this year too like old times 🙂

  11. Gretel may be wishing Big Brother the best but I’m death-riding it and praying to God that it will bomb badly and be sent to Go! within the next few days.

We didn’t want Big Brother back in the first place. It is disgusting to see it back on TV again so soon after we had all moved on and vowed “never again!”.
