X Factor on top for Seven

Ratings: Seven hits back at Nine's ratings run with The X Factor at #1 on 1.6m viewers, delivering some impressive first acts.

Seven hit back at Nine’s ratings run last night with The X Factor at #1 on 1.6m viewers, delivering some impressive first acts.

It was the highest debut for the series across its four seasons and validates the network’s decision not to compete head to head with the first week of Big Brother.

Seven won the night with 34.3% to Nine 28.6%, ABC 18.1%, TEN 15.1% and SBS just 3.9%.

Next for Seven were Seven News (1.32m), Today Tonight (1.22m), Home and Away (1.1m), GCB (873,000) and Deal or No Deal (592,000).

Nine News (1.25m) led for Nine, Underbelly: Badness was 1.22m and Big Brother: Live Nominations was 1.18m. ACA was 1.17m and Hot Seat was 625,000.

ABC News (1.05m) topped ABC1 then Australian Story (809,000), 7:30 (858,000), Q & A (665,000), Four Corners and Media Watch (both on 634,000).

Trouble continues for TEN in fourth place. TEN News was best on 749,000 with Chrissie Swan’s excellent debut as Can of Worms host only managing 590,000. Don’t Tell the Bride premiered to 583,000. Modern Family struggled on 484,000, The Project 6pm was 471,000 and The Shire was just 251,000.

SBS ONE also had a tough night with Mythbusters on 205,000, Man vs Wild on 170,000 and World News Australia on 157,000.

Sunrise: 363,000
Today: 325,000

  1. 484000 is a terrible lead in for 7.30 on ten. . .

They need to invest in a new program, take a couple of risks and it may just prove itself in the 7pm slot. . . Oh wait.

  2. Chrissie Swan was fantastic on Can of Worms last night. She is light years ahead of Dicko, she wiped the floor with him. Great episode, even though I dislike K Langbroek and Fitzy intensely.

Saw parts of X-Factor last night, it looked very slick and the kid channelling Duffy was very good, but I wonder at the wisdom of having a 14-year-old in something like this. Some amazing singers on show last night, much better first-up talent than The Voice.

  3. I really enjoyed xfactor last night. I agree with comments regarding Ronan. Yes it looked like he had been watching The Voice and got on the desk, just like Joel and Seal. Reading in the U.K press this morning and they are saying they want Mel B full time for its version next year. Would hate to lose her.

  4. @Adam.. i totally agree. Also Ronan seriously needs to tone down that whole fist pumping routine. During Bella’s song he actually he got up on the table arms stretched out in some sort of Jesus style pose.

  5. X-Factor last night was excellent. The talent was sensational….thumbs up.

And Big Brother last night the way they did nominations was really good to. It was quick, sharp and even a little dramatic.

Both should be happy with the night especailly 7 .. XFactor is better than The Voice IMO

  6. The constant screaming on the X Factor is terrible. I really want to hear the amazing voices of these talented people but yet most of the time I hear these stupid young girls in the audience screaming.. it is very over the top and it distracts from the quality of the singers!
The audience should only be heard from after the singers have finished.. or better still have no audience like the original series of the Popstars!!

  7. Really enjoyed Can of Worms last night (so much better than Dicko) and are confident it will build as world of mouth spreads. That is all Ten can rely on now-a-days as limited numbers are watch Ten and being exposed to their promos. Yes agreed with Kieran that AFL bought other viewers to Ten, but they have no attraction like that anymore.

And good to see Shire under 300. What it deserves.

  8. X-Factor was really good. I think seeing Samantha Jade was interesting. I remember when she got her record contract, I had no idea it fell through.

Icaught a bit of Can of Worms. Loved Chrissie, but I think Mondays is just too competitive of a timeslot.

  9. I have to agree Kieran, Can of Worms was brilliant and there are many shows in the Ten stable that would rate better just by being on 7 or 9. It’s frustrating that viewers won’t switch over to 10 cause they’re missing out on some incredible shows that deserve a bigger audience.

  10. Modern Family only rated 474k in the 7pm slot!! That has got to be troublesome. They need to do something to act on that, stat, because it is providing a terrible lead-in to their 7:30 programs. Even those old Friends repeats and episodes of Neighbours never sunk that low.

I agree with those who said X Factor was well done…I said this on the other thread but I prefer Nat Bass to Delta Goodrem and Mel B + Ronan + Guy over the other judges on The Voice. Josh Brookes and that first girl that auditioned did really well.

  11. Ten has been going downhill year after year. And this year in particular has been a disaster, with even more strange decisions being made. How can their programmer(s) continue to hold down their job(s) all of this time without someone there saying enough is enough?

  12. Looking at Channel 10 ratings in the past few weeks and the opening sketch from season 2 of The Late Show (Where Still number 4) is ringing more and more each and every dayat this current time. And being beaten strongly last night by 2 shows previously on their network.Crazy.

  13. David…when you think you’ve seen enough numbers to make the call, could you report on how Sbs is faring with Countdown? From what i can glean, their news(157,000)might be down a bit.Didn’t it generally average around 170,000 with L&n as the lead in?It seemed to me that L&n did yeoman duty for Sbs,filling(cheaply) two 1/2 hour slots, getting perhaps 140,000 to as much as 170,000 I once saw,in that tough 6 pm spot, and presumably selling a whack of books,if number of editions is an indication.. with a real devoted following, and robust website.Anecdotally it seems Countdown has disappointed..but would you rule out a Letters and Numbers return?

  14. AFL has been propping up Ten shows for past few years, with shows promoted to a different TEN audience.
TEN pulled out of AFL to focus on NRL rights and that hasn’t seemed to have missed out their too.

  15. I am surprised that X Factor did so well against BB’s first ‘live’ nominations.

For me, I am watching BB just to have that experience with my family of all watching something together – the canned laughter leaves me cold(surely it is fake as the things they are laughing at are not that funny).

I thought we might have had some stimulating debate on current topics of interest, but for me it is largely more of the same – good looking twentysomethings with not a lot to offer.

I expect the number to stabilise around the million for normal episodes so that is not bad but the show could have been so much better.

And Sonya is yet to be herself – needs to be naughty ad lib like in her role on Dancing with the Stars.

  16. Watched the first hour of X factor and knew it was going to rate very well.

This is how a reality / talent show should be produced.

It would have been even more enjoyable if Ronan Keating didn’t stand up and wave his arms around all the time – and the constant shots of screaming teenagers ought to be toned down a wee bit.

Otherwise – a very slickly produced and entertaining hour of television.

    Well done Seven.

  17. Argh, this annoys me! Can of Worms was Brilliant last night – i thoroughly enjoyed it – but the numbers are just because it is on TEN – If it was on Seven or Nine it would be rating around the million mark!

  18. I feel very disheartened by the figures for Can Of Worms. I thought it was a terrific episode. Chrissie was a wonderful host, entertaining guests, and the who thing seemed more lively than last series (I do miss Meshel Laurie though).

Some reasonably good talent on X Factor. I am worried for that Duffy singing 14 year old girl they put through to boot camp though. A competition like this will eat her alive.

  19. Ten is nearing rock bottom – and they should see this as an exciting opportunity. They could really re-invent themselves here, by dispensing with all the reality rubbish they have been churning out and start commissioning some more quality dramas – and hey, here’s an idea, some Comedy shows. Then, get a new programmer – or at least a new policy to stop moving everything all the time so that a show can actually build an audience – and you never know, people might come back. The main reason 7 and 9 are getting the monster share of the ratings is because there is no decent alternative to their shows (a couple of which are good shows, but a lot of them are rubbish too – just not quite as rubbish as what Ten is offering up).

  20. i think out of all that most viewers who watched X factor came mostly from TEN and a few extra from Nine…. TEN must be having nightmares on what to do with the mass exodus from their channel in regards to viewers
