Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes is writing a prequel which follows how the Earl and Countess of Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern in the show now, first met.
“I do actually have an idea of doing a prequel of the courtship of Robert and Cora, when all those American heiresses were arriving in London.
“They had a slightly troubled courtship, because she was in love with him before they married, as we know, and he married her entirely for her money,” said Fellowes, speaking at the BAFTA Screenwriters’ Lecture series.
“I sort of feel there’s something quite nice in there because he’s a decent cove, and so he feels rather guilty about this which has affected their marriage beyond that.”
The spin-off drama would cast a pair of younger actors in the roles, currently played by Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, as his American wife.
The prequel may also provide an opportunity to film some of the drama in America.

I’m certainly not a Grandma, I’m 22 and I love Downton Abbey so D@GP don’t tar us with the same brush.
While it’s a good idea a bit wary of casting, not so much for Robert and Cora but more Martha and Violet, which actress could bring younger versions of these two to life like Shirley MacLaine and Maggie Smith have.
Love Downton Abbey. Quality cast, acting and scenery. Haven’t missed an episode. Prequel sounds fabulous…. and I’m ”only” 37!
I really really hope this goes ahead. I love Downton Abbey.
Thought I should just add I am not a grandmother either and I enjoy Downton Abbey!!
Guess what, not everyone wants to watch football and motor racing and other sport! I will give all those a big miss thank you!
My grandmother was so thrilled, she passed – which is exactly what we will do when this turgid little tale is screened locally…
It’s only TV. Just change the channel?
My grandmother will be thrilled.
I can recommend the TV series The Buccaneers based on the Edith Wharton Novel, 1995. It was shown on the ABC.
I like the sound of this. But then I hope it doesn’t turn into a mess like the Titanic series he wrote.
