Solid start for House Husbands

Ratings: It was a good night for House Husbands, Sunday Night, 60 Minutes and Call the Midwife, but bad for NCIS.

Nine’s Father’s Day launch of House Husbands has paid off with the drama attracting 1.37m viewers last night.

While Nine ranked first in primary channels, Seven’s multichannels helped get them over the line.

Seven Network won with 28.9% to Nine 28.5%, ABC 22.3%, TEN 15.4% and SBS 5.0%.

Sunday Night was strongest for Seven on 1.35m viewers then Seven News (1.33m), Border Security (1.26m / 1.05m), Mrs Brown’s Boys (913,000) and Kath and Kim (516,000).

House Husbands (1.37m) was #1 for the night, winning its demos and ranking slightly better in Sydney (447,000) than its home city of Melbourne (427,000). Also for Nine 60 Minutes pulled 1.32m, then Nine News (1.2m), but Big Brother was down (949,000). The Mentalist was 615,000.

Call the Midwife did good business for ABC1 on 988,000, followed by ABC News (934,000), Grand Designs Revisited (844,000), Dream Build (797,000), Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple (554,000) and Paralympics highlights (460,000).

It was an awful night for TEN, unable to surpass 600,000 for Modern Family‘s second episode (ep 1: 416,000). Even a new NCIS bombed on 551,000 -by switching to Sundays, viewers are unaware it was a new episode, and it is one of the few assets the network has. TEN News was 425,000, Graham Norton was 364,000, The Project was 316,000 and The Simpsons was 292,000.

On SBS ONE Meet the Romans pulled 273,000 then Inside Nature’s Giants (210,000), and In the Shadow of the Moon (incorrectly logged as Tabloid) was 202,000.

Best on multichannels was ABC2’s Mike the Knight on 226,000.

  1. What is TEN thinking movie one of it’s few rating shows out of it’s usual Tuesday night slot, bad move TEN which has now been proven by the ratings, NCIS should get double that number.

Also the experiment of putting F1 on the main channel has failed to bring in the ratings. Please switch it back to ONE, move new NCIS back to Tuesday and put a movie or something else on Sunday nights!

  2. HouseHusbands was all a bit ‘try hard’ for me. Firass was good, but the rest of the cast…..blah (overacting at it worst) typical of Ch9 to spend the majority of storylines (or lack of) on the 3 ‘straight’ families & Gyton Grantley’s ‘gay’ husband got just the one scene, treading carefully i suppose.

  3. Couldn’t agree more OzJay. As a ‘house husband’ myself, I found the title characters fairly one-dimensional and slightly insulting. And yes, I would imagine there would be some public ‘outrage’ if those roles were reversed.

  4. House Husbands was like your kid’s first attempt at making biscuits – cookie cutter plot devices, half-baked storylines, a bit tasteless, a couple of bizarre ingredients, and a network of convenient relationships that is, frankly, difficult to swallow.

Will be lucky to crack a million next week (ratings not eggs).

  5. Why did the writer feel it was necessary to add the lame/stupid story lines about the missing teacher and the kids driving the bus? It was all a bit cookie cutter for my taste but I liked the cast.

  6. House Husbands was ok but it was a typical Channel 9 show with the same old actors. Give us someone fresh!

TEN are freaking morons. NCIS is the best show on their network and they kill it. Good work Channel TEN good work.

  7. @OzJay…I read through all the comments and have to agree with you It was all a little blah and partially mindless to me. And the pies issue has been done in TV advertising in ‘soup’ ads and that’s what hit me…that felt like a piece from a marketing ad.

An underdone show dumbing down issues that would be considered quite lame if as OzJay suggests, 4 women were in the roles. This ‘take’ is pretty typical for Australia. Women used to think this take on men cute; I find it a little lame.

Firass was good but the mix wasn’t because of that ‘wooden’ element that @thegoldenbear mentions. Not encouraged to tune in again even though I suspect it will get better….?

  8. Imagine, just for a moment, a show called “House Wives” in which the four tltle characters were All clueless losers? They quake with fear waiting to see the school principal. One of them ditches work on her first day to take part in a silly search for an over-medicated assistant principal. Another buys chicken pies retail and passes them off as her own to curry favour with other parents. Yet another has not the slightest clue about looking after a six month old, despite having older twins… All of this is presented as amusing in House Husbands, presumably because the characters are men. And Nine is attempting to sell it all as a fresh, contemporary look at fathers. Their cynicism is breathtaking.

  9. We gave the show a go last night and thought it wasn’t too bad. Ch9 progammed it well with little competition.
A few loose ends in the plot lines and what was with the missing teacher? But the cast is a good mix of seasoned professionals.
My only real gripe is how incestuous the storyline was. The relationships between the main blokes; the wives at the hospital; and right at the end with the bird at the pub that was interested in the footballer, being Gary Sweets’ daughter, who just happened to be studying law so you can assume she’ll be helping the footballer in his upcoming custody case.
I know you have to set up characters and their relationship but this just too obvious. It gave all the answers so there’s little to ponder.
Also, the use of music just didn’t hit it for me. But it is Australian and provides employment for many people so I do hope it works.

  10. Gee I dunnno…Gary Sweet was so wooden. Firass Dirani was excellent. The other were growing on me towards the end, but the whole story was a bit far fetched. I thought this was about ordinary Men being house husbands.

  11. How much do we all trust ch9 with House Husbands?

Any chance of it starting on time. Will it stay the course or get ditched like Tricky Business & Dallas?

Their (ch9s) track record is poor

  12. House Husbands was ok but not sure why I even need to watch next week because their preview of next week lasted for about 10 minutes and surely gave away the entire plot line?

  13. Hope “House Husbands” continues to rate well 🙂

As for “NCIS”, like a lot of others, I guess, I bought the S9 DVD, so there was no need to watch. We’re sad that Ch 10 has ruined (what once was) one of the top rating shows on their network. 🙁

  14. I watched House Husbands last night, and thought it was a bit blah. I don’t know if I’ll be coming back. I know it was the first episode and we are getting to meet the characters, but after the episode ended I wasn’t interested in following them any longer. And the whole bus scenario seemed quite contrived.
