Actor Johnny Lewis, best known for playing Kip “Half-Sack” Epps on US drama Sons of Anarchy, has died, aged 28.

Lewis, who also appeared in The OC and dated singer Katy Perry, was found dead on the driveway outside a home in Los Angeles. An elderly woman was found beaten to death inside.

An LAPD rep says that Lewis is also a suspect in the murder of his landlord, 81-year-old Catherine Davis, whose body was found inside the residence. It appears that Lewis may have fallen from the building’s roof, though his cause of death has not yet been confirmed. There is speculation drugs may have been involved.

SoA creator Kurt Sutter tweeted, “not sure if folks know this yet, but johnny lewis (halfsack) died last night,” Sutter tweeted. “i wish i could say that i was shocked by the events last night, but i was not. i am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. yes, it’s [a] day [of] mourning, but it’s also a day of awareness and gratitude. sadly, some of us carry the message by dying.”

Lewis was written out of Sons of Anarchy in season 2. “Johnny wasn’t happy on the show. Creatively, he really wanted out of his contract. We had ongoing conversations, and we decided we’d find some noble way for him to go,” Sutter said in 2009.

He also appeared in Smallville, Bones, CSI, The Guardian, Boston Public, Malcolm in the Middle and Judging Amy.

  1. Actually, Marissa had her brief same sex fling (with Olivia Wilde) in season 2 of The O.C. Johnny Lewis appeared in season 3 of The O.C. as one of Marissa’s new friends at the public school that she had enrolled in after being expelled for shooting Trey. Johnny Lewis was written out of the show following the death of a character named Johnny (who fell from a cliff to his death).

Truly shocking news as I instantly recognised his name. The circumstances behind his death are even more bizarre and devastating.

  2. Sad but, it would seem, not completely surprising.

No spoiler re Halfsack not being in the series any more. He “left” in S2 and S3 recently finished on FTA.
