Nine News is set to launch a one-hour news bulletin in the 3pm afternoon slot from January 7, according to The Age.
Amelia Adams and Wendy Kingston (pictured) are tipped to be presenters of a magazine-like bulletin, which will be followed by US entertainment show Extra before another hour of news from 4.30pm.
Children’s shows in the current slot will move to a digital channel.
Next year is shaping up as a big battle in News, with Seven whispers about major change and ABC set to launch a 5:30 bulletin, hosted from Perth.

So Nine does wall-to-wall News from 5am to 6:30pm, then, when most people are home and want news, there’s nothing (on 9 or 7) after 6:30pm – except recorded “updates” of old 6pm stuff which are not “updates” at all.
Nine confirmed updates were recorded ten mins before airing in the evening. Seven confirmed recording in the hour after the 6pm news. Of course, that may well differ between Nine and WIN.
Nine “News” is not news. No-one will notice that children’s programming has moved to a digital channel.
Ok this has gone major overload now. Nine and Seven news this year has been tabloid shit and now Nine is giving another hour of the crap. Sorry but its time that the networks invest in news stories that are actually hard breaking stories instead of more news bulletins. There is a major difference.
Over the top. Not impressed with this at all. Especially if its on a 3 hour delay into Perth, its useless.
@Gary – I wouldn’t put it past them! And if they can get away with it, how long before they start screening NZ news and calling it “local content” too?
🙂
So Nine will have 5am News, 5.30am-9am Today Show News, 1130am News, 3pm News, 4.30pm News and 6pm News. It is too much.. they are turning Channel 9 into a news channel!
Why? Weird, especially with ABC24 doing it better, with no nails-on-a-blackboard-voice autocue readers.
So here’s what the schedule will be like:
11:00 News
15:00 News
16:30 News
18:00 News
That’s overkill.
Absolutely over the top. Maybe this is Nine’s witty response to deliver more hours of Australian programming?
The Big Bang Theory to be replaced by the 7pm news.
Two and a Half Men to be replaced by the 8:30pm news
@deedeedragons, I’m home but I don’t watch news before 6pm.
“Magazine-like bulletin” = celebrity gossip and promos for the next big movie, book or band/singer’s tour. Booorrring!
Stupid. Who’s home at 3pm? Nobody. Working retail i can tell you the 3pm to 4pm hour is a ghost town because everyone is coming to and from picking up the kids from school.
Here’s an idea – less focus on adding more daytime and early evening news bulletins and more focus on not cancelling late night bulletins.
I think the networks have gone news crazy!!
Overkill.
Way too much news!
@ randwick…you said it all!……
@ tomothyd….I am neither of those…but if I wanted news at that hour of the day?!?….ABC24.
Nine must be stupid if they think Seven’s news plan will work!
Why not combine 4me (prime7/7) and Extra/Gold (9/WIN) and launch Sky News Australia, both 7 & 9 have about a 33% stake. Not going to need all this news myself, will stick with the computer and ABC/SBS.
I think the 4:30 news should be moved and be an hour from 4pm and then either add a new show or make an hour long Hot Seat…
Having 2.5 hours of news, in the space of 3.5 hours is too much. What’s next, Seven will out do Nine and air more News in the afternoon? (as they both try and out do each other! lol)
Why? ……
Sounds like way too much news in the arvo. Clearly this is aimed at 10… hasn’t it won daytime 12 years in a row now?
To much news! Ther is more than enough news casts throughout the day and in the afternoon slots. The 3pm session is not going to be an afternoon ratings success as at this time of the day, most people are either at work or waiting in line in the school car parks picking up their children.
Did Nine not remember the disaster that was called “This afterNOON” or however it was capitalised?
