Seven rides away with horse racing

Seven cements its position as the home of horse racing on Free to Air television.

2013-01-14_1814Seven has secured its place as the home of horse racing on Free to Air television after signing the BMW Sydney Racing Carnival, including The Golden Slipper in Sydney, and the Spring Racing Carnival (formerly with Nine) including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in Melbourne.

It follows from Seven already being home to the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The partnership with TVN and the racing industry builds on Seven’s leadership in sports television and the network’s portfolio of major sports events, including the Australian Football League, the Melbourne Cup Carnival, The Australian Open and Wimbledon, the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, the Australian Open Golf, V8 Supercars and the Bathurst 1000.

“This is a great day for Australian racing and a great day for Seven – all the big events live and available to all Australians,” Seven chief executive Tim Worner said.

“The Golden Slipper, The AJC Derby, The Caulfield Cup, The Cox Plate and so many more Group One events will be brought to life in the one dedicated destination.

“Live sport is a key part of Seven’s strategy and we look forward with great excitement to 2013 when at times there will be live sport on all three of our channels simultaneously. It is a great business outcome for Seven and a great breakthrough for viewers.”

TVN’s outgoing Chairman Harold Mitchell AC said: “It is very satisfying that the Seven Network has recognised the value of TVN’s premium racing product. Following on so quickly from the execution of the aggregation of the NSW and Victorian racing media rights prior to Christmas, this new free to air partnership is tangible recognition of the strength of TVN and an indication of just how important the establishment of TVN is for Australian racing.

“Regular live sport on free to air is what thoroughbred racing has needed for many years – now all sports fans can enjoy the very best Spring and Autumn racing for 27 spectacular days each year.”

  1. +1 rach – It’s annoying that you get the ‘contractual agreement’ screen and forced to switch to 7 in the Carnival. I don’t think Ch 9 has the same constraints when they do it, so hopefully the issue is ironed out.

What do you even mean great news it is the worst news all day. Everyone else is furious, so I believe TEN should get it. V8s are just not listening to the fans. 7 are killing the sport, when TEN comes along it will rescue it from the dead.

  3. On the V8s NineMSN is reporting “Seven has re-signed V8 Supercars for another two years. Under the deal, V8 Supercars will receive about $32 million a year in media rights from Seven. In return, Seven gets exclusive free-to-air broadcast rights.”

  4. Congrats to Ch7 on taking a punt on racing (sorry about the pun!). This is great news for race followers without Fox or near a TAB. I just hope that this commitment translates into more vision of the major races on the Saturday night sports coverage.

  5. Will these races still be shown Live on “the real Racing stations” TVN and Sky Racing where we get real racing info and not cross promotions and celebraties in marquees or telling us who dressed them…, yes everything but racing

  6. Kochie mentioned just after the 6am news on Sunrise this morning that seven have signed the V8’s for another 2 yaers late last night. Even Mark Beretta seemed a little suprised at the news…
