Seven signs two year V8 Supercars deal

Updated: After much speculation, Seven renews its broadcast deal with V8 Supercars.

2013-01-15_1113The Seven Network has renewed its broadcast deal with V8 Supercars for another two years.

It follows on-going speculation about whether another network would stitch up the rights or indeed if a new deal could be reached at all. Seven yesterday also secured new horse racing deals.

“This is an excellent outcome for the sport and fans,” V8 Supercars CEO David Malone said.

“The extension gives great continuity heading into a very exciting 2013 season. Seven has been a great partner and we look forward to their ongoing commitment to the highest level of coverage and promotion.”

Today’s agreement with V8 Supercars for its Championship season and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 builds on Seven’s leadership in sports television and the network’s portfolio of major sports events.

The new deal ensures that live free-to-air coverage of all Championship races continues in all metropolitan and regional markets.

“We’re pleased to extend our partnership with V8 Supercars. Seven is looking forward to continuing to work with V8 Supercars to build on the sport’s success across our media platforms,” Tim Worner, CEO Television, Seven Network, said.

“We have a deep connection with the sport – in particular the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 which Seven first broadcast in 1963. We’re ready for the launch of our new agreement and with V8 Supercars we’re looking forward to this year’s Championship.”

The overall content package significantly enhances the sport’s exposure and provides exciting new levels of engagement and experience.

“V8 Supercars is well placed for the future,” Mr Malone said.

“The certainty of a substantial television package for the next two years enables us to move forward with great clarity.”

Television ratings and event attendances increased year-on-year in 2012.

V8 Supercars will continue to produce its own broadcast coverage for the Seven Network and their other broadcast partners. For the last six years V8 Supercars has offered world class coverage and continual enhancements to the viewing experience.

The V8 Supercar season commences in just over a month’s time with a pre-season test day at Sydney Motorsport Park, followed in March by the blockbuster Adelaide Clipsal 500, an event which is tipped to attract more than 290,000 spectators.

The 2013 season has been hotly anticipated with new marques and events.

Nissan and AMG will join the grid: Nissan Motorsport will field four Nissan Altimas while Erebus Motorsport will race three Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG V8 Supercars alongside long-term marques Ford and Holden.

In May V8 Supercars makes its US debut at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

That’s because NBL and Hopman Cup are not on the sporting laws. Look at what TEN’s coverage of the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix they broadcast the weekend live. Isn’t SPEED’s coverage of IZOD Indy Car Series up for renewal since TEN couldn’t get the V8s why not try and get that.
    @Craig
I wish I could do that too, 7 doesn’t broadcast it in HD on 7mate and later on 7 for 2014

  2. For those of you who believe that the Ten Network would treat the V8s better are just kidding themselves. They dont cover the sports they do have well, NBL is one example. You only have to look at their diabolical decision making to understand that the current idiots at Ten have no Idea on covering sport, Ten will only do sport on Ten and not in HD just look at the Hopman Cup and the NBL (Friday Night games not withstanding), and it will only be Live for Victorian and NSW viewers.

  3. According to SpeedTV’s Twitter Account, “Pay-TV broadcast rights for @V8Supercars in 2013 are still under discussion”

We can only hope Live and/or in Simculast so we don’t have to wait til un ungodly hour during the AFL Season to watch it… Agree with previous posts, Ch10 would have done a better job.

I just hope for a MegaWall (V8s and AFL) that I can actually select and watch for myself… and HD of course.

  4. So V8 Supercars have to wear all the production costs for the network. They wanted a 5 year deal for more money so they had guaranteed income and coverage that would attract sponsorship, but could only get a short two year deal for less money.

Ten don’t have the rights because they were only prepared to offer even less.

Yet the spin makes it all appear like a great victory for everyone!

  5. @PJs Ronin – I don’t think the top speed has much to do with it, only a few rounds like at Bathurst do they even get to hit close to 300kph. It’s more about the action and close racing, in this regard some of the support races are much better than the V8s.

Ad for HD, from all accounts ‘V8 Supercars’ does product it in HD but Seven chooses to air most rounds on it’s main channel without simulcast on 7Mate in HD. Last year viewers on Foxtel were able to see every round (delayed) in full HD on Speed. It’s not being upscaled.

Yeh right, Barbagallo Raceway was shown on Delay, first race on Sunday. Abu Dhabi Race 1 was shown on Delay and how are they going to manage COTA. That’s why I don’t trust 7 at all ever since they got the rights off TEN especially into Perth.
Everybody it will be low bit rate so it won’t be HD as 7 never get no where near the bit rate of a HD channel. David Malone claims he listens.
I was pimped when TEN was the front runner yet now he is losing viewers for sure now. Soon they are going to out of business because they just lost 20mil which proves it’s not a TV deal at all

  7. PJs Ronin, TEN can’t be trusted with F1 and MotoGP. I still haven’t forgiven them for screwing over fans last year.

Many F1 fans have abandoned F1 and will continue to use ‘alternate means’.

  8. Due to some comments I am adding this line from the Press Release back in: The new deal ensures that live free-to-air coverage of all Championship races continues in all metropolitan and regional markets.

  9. I was hoping for an AFL type deal, Live on FTA with there pathetic SD coverage and Live ad free in HD on Speed including qualifying. This deal is going backwards, not forwards. And remember the only native HD races on Speed last year were Bathurst, Gold Coast and Sydney.

  10. I cant believe that gave it back to Seven. The V8’s really need to go back to Ten. They did the best V8 coverage. Replays were plenty. I agree with the other comments. Way too many ads and the fact it’s not in HD is just inexcusable. Last season was boring (Not channel 7’s fault). How many times can the same team and driver win races… Yawn. I hope this year is better with the news cars.

  11. I enjoy motorsports, but this V8 Supercar series is as boring as all get out. Even with all the ‘super’ hype these vehicles are still pretty lame.

Top speed is about 315 kph whereas MotoGP hits 355kph at Monza… and MotoGP riders do this without a roll cage, without a tonne of steel around the driver and they do it head first!!

Thank the Higgs Boson that Ten got MotoGP and F1… now, who’s got the NHRA coverage?

  12. LOL!!! V8 Supercars have got a less money than their last deal and apart from 3 or 4 major races most of the action will be on 7mate. What a Joke!!!!. Ch 10 i was informed did not even make a bid and Nine put in a minor bid as it wants to save as much money as possible to retain the cricket rights to which I beleive Ch 10 will be throwing everything at even their front door.
Tony Cochrane completly stuffed the v8’s when he soldout Ch 10 6 years ago on the tv rights. V8’S deserve everything they get in this new deal, which is absoulute rubbish to the veiwing public at large. Tony and David Malone need to hang their head in shame. I suppose Tony saw the writing on the wall a few years back when he sold out his majority stake in V8’s. i do really feel sorry for those poor veiwers and car owners who will be straching their heads thinking why have we got less money and our product will be shown on a secondary channel.

  13. Dont understand why they would want to bury their V8’s in amongst Seven’s AFL schedule. Surely they would get better value for money on TEN where TEN can dedicate more time and focus to V8’s alongside Ten’s other motorsport offerings.

  14. Yeah “V8 Supercars” produces the coverage, just a shame Seven choses to air them in SD, ironically except the support races which will continue to be on 7Mate.

The only way to see them in HD is on Speed (delayed coverage if it continues) or on over seas markets. 2013 all rounds should be simulcast on 7Mate in HD!

  15. In stunning CrapOvision on Seven rather watch the replay on Foxtel Speed HD

“The certainty of a substantial television package for the next two years enables us to move forward with great clarity.” what!!! Clarity on SD

  16. Well Nine and TEN did not want it so it was logical Seven extended it for a while. Neil Crompton is the one commentator who really knows his stuff.
I fear for the sport with Nissan and Mercedes, when Nissan was in it before, they won every race, crowds dropped off, TV ratings nosedived it was up to TEN to bring it back, along with Holden and Ford only competing.
Time will tell I guess, but we really want HD, put the races on 7mate, or is that too logical?

  17. Does that mean Speed will still cover in HD – something Ch 7 seems to have difficulty doing for any sport they cover? I imagine they can’t go Live. Also, no mention here on the digital rights… are they captured separately? Do Speed/FoxSports have a cut on that with their Telstra partnerships?

  18. LOL
“Seven has been a great partner and we look forward to their ongoing commitment to the highest level of coverage”
“For the last six years V8 Supercars has offered world class coverage”

“Highest level of coverage” and “world class coverage” obviously doesn’t include high definition

  19. I don’t like 7 at all and David Malone thinks he is pleasing the fans when an actual fact he is not listening to us give it to TEN. I hope TEN gets the IZOD Indy Car Series. Everyone is furious with the V8 Officials trying to bury the sport because TEN will rescue it from the dead. No HD, too many ads, commentators are terrible.
