Is Dancing with the Stars still on Seven’s dance card?

Updated: Speculation that Dancing with the Stars may not return to Seven and could even switch to Nine has been denied.

2013-03-29_0047The latest speculation between Seven and Nine has now raised questions that Dancing with the Stars may not return to Seven -and could even switch to Nine.

A source tells the Daily Telegraph, “There’s no real place for Dancing this year. There’s a lot of reality TV in the works with (Celebrity) Splash, My Kitchen Rules and The X Factor later in the year. It wouldn’t really be missed.”

Production costs on Celebrity Splash are also said to have impacted.

Nine declined to comment directly on the rumour but a spokesperson cheekily said, “We do have a habit of reformatting shows and making them better.”

Seven has already announced DWTS for 2013 but it also announced Australia’s Got Talent before dropping it, allowing Nine to pick it up. Both networks are currently locked in a battle for Mel B.

Seven has (currently) lost Melanie Brown as Dancing co-host while Daniel MacPherson has been ensconced in LA.

“We are in pre-production,” a Seven spokeswoman said.

The rights to the show are owned by the BBC.

Update: Industry source today tells TV Tonight that DWTS is returning to Seven.

  1. Channel nine new slogan should read
“everything old is new again on nine ”
clearly no talent no originality and clearly no creative department left at nine any more.kerry paker would be rolling in his grave.

  2. I like Dancing With The Stars and will watch it no matter what network it is on. I actually wouldn’t mind it moving to 9 and give some channel 9 personalities have a go for a change instead of all the 7 stars.

  3. Typical of 9 if they take DWTS, don’t have ideas of there own, have to wait for other channels to drop a programme then say we pinched it aren’t we clever little vegemites, we are going to re-vamp it, but when a series is not doing so good on one station, all the re-vamping in the world is not going to help it will still be the same format in the end with slight variations. Really starting to hate channel 9 with its pettiness.

  4. Seven must have run out of D-listers by now, unless they want to make an all-AFL series. Time to let Nine scrape the bottom of their barrel.

  5. Dancing With The Stars needs a new judging panel, hosts and better celebrities.

Celebrity Splash is going to flop because it’s going up against The Voice.

  6. Yesterday on Mornings (Ch 9) they had 2 big stories about DWTS in America, one being a recap of the night before performances. I didnt quite get why they were even bothering. I wonder if it connected.

  7. The format has become a little tired on ch7 over the past few years and the ‘star power’ of the stars has been somewhat questionable. I think they have used virtually all their contracted personalities willing to give it a go. A refresh on ch9 with a new range of ‘stars’ wouldn’t be all that bad.

  8. Yes, enough already with Nine poaching shows from other networks. It might be a good idea for Seven to rest it for 2013 and come back re-invigorated for 2014. Plus I think Dancing is a bit more classy than nines mostly bogan landscape.
So seven should keep it as theirs.

  9. If they did rest DWTS for Celebrity Splash… What?! Do they really think people would rather watch “celebrities” dive into a pool than ballroom dance? Are they that desperate to reinvigorate the celebrity reality show format?
