For more than the first time in its life-span, Futurama has been cancelled in the US.
Comedy Central has decided not to renew the animated comedy, now due to end its 140-episode run there in September.
The final 13 episodes, which represent the second half of season 7, will begin airing in the US in June.
The series aired from 1999 to 2003 on FOX before four-direct-to-DVD movies that Comedy Central ran in half-hour eps in 2008-09. A sixth season aired in 2010-11, and the first half of the seventh season debuted last year. But the show has declined in the ratings, from 2.6 million viewers in 2010 to 1.7 million in 2012.
“I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” executive producer David X. Cohen told EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”
Matt Groening said, “We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”

Jason S: “FOX should pick it up *wink wink* ”
If you remember, FOX originally canceled the show after four seasons because of poor ratings which was the result of them moving the show to different timeslots. I doubt that they would pick it up.
Why?
Cut to the Simpsons regular – pimpled covered teen with a squeaky voice atop the old geezer rock ready to end his life by jumping off: “Why did they cancel Futurama?”…..
Never watched an episode, just didn’t appeal to me for whatever reason… but it did seem like it had a very limited audience compared to The Simpsons or Family Guy.
Great news. Hopefully the next to go is The Simpsons.
FX or FXX should pick it up.
Bring on Tripping the Rift instead.
I don’t think FOX would pick them up again. Even if they asked i’m sure Groening would take much pleasure in saying no.
Not surprised to see it cancelled again. I don’t mind this series though and who knows FOX since axing The Cleveland Show might pick it up again 😛
No! Not again!
This show is so much funnier then moronic Family Guy or stale The Simpsons. I don’t understand why it isn’t more popular???
FOX should pick it up *wink wink*
Really sad to see it cancelled again, hoping for another reprieve but certainly not expecting it at all. Never believed it would have continued on this long so it’s really defied the odds already.
