Samantha Jade, Karise Eden and the realities of TV fame

-9498Two sobering yarns on winners of TV reality shows have made the press this week on X Factor champ Samantha Jade and The Voice winner Karise Eden.

News Limited reports documents were lodged in a Californian court last week from Camp West Recorders Inc company presidents John Harris and Ty Knox (no relation!), suing Jade for damages and alleged contract breaches as well as Sony Music, Parade Artists, Fremantle Media Australia and Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment.

Jade, 26, reportedly signed a development deal with the pair at 15, when she moved to Los Angeles. They claim to have spent $2 million developing her as an artist and that she is still signed to their management company.

The show noted her previous attempts at success as part of her ‘back story’ on the show.

Her current management Parade will be defending the claims.

An album and tour will follow her new single released on June 28.

Meanwhile The Voice winner Karise Eden has spoken about a challenging first year after winning the Nine series.

The 20-year-old told News Limited her year spent writing, recording and performing just a few live shows had been a “freeing experience.”

“I’m super grateful that I’ve been given the freedom to work on original material in my own time.”

She performs her new single on the show this week, but indicates she will then be laying low to continue writing.

“I hope that by sharing a little peek into what I’ve been doing on the show that gave me my break, my supporters won’t mind if I disappear for a while to keep working on more songs.”

Meanwhile the show keeps telling its contestants they are already stars….

  1. “Meanwhile the show keeps telling its contestants they are already stars….”

    Thank you, David!!!!!!

Just quietly, I’m really sick of The Voice’s entire presence on TV as something different, electrifying and big and successful. Nothing about it is authentic and unfortunately, no amount of money and big name artists who are the face of it will make it any better.

Having songs in the iTunes top 10 doesn’t make you a star, it means you’re on TV and people have iTunes accounts. I mean when Margaret Thatcher died “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” went #1 in the UK…. C’mon….

Don’t even get me started on The X Factor. Seven spend more time making it look bigger & better than the actual quality of it is.

I could go on all day about Karise and her window and Samantha Jade and her continuing mediocrity that will keep her from reaching the superstar status she’s trying so hard to make for herself but, what can I say… I’m an Idol man through and through. It worked and I miss it.

  2. Karise has the most grating voice I have ever heard on a singer. I can’t imagine an entire album from her.

Samantha Jade on the other hand – seems to have it all. She released a couple of singles prior to The X Factor. I’d be asking exactly what this previous management company did that they sunk $2million into an artist, but it took reality TV to break her…

  3. Contestants in reality TV show competitions have Exactly 12 months from the time the show finishes to launch their own career. Once the following years competition finishes, people immediately forget about the previous years.
As soon as you are not the ‘current’ so-and-so people stop caring about you.

I bet you won’t be able to name a single BB contestant from 2012 once this years season wraps up!

  4. Samantha Jade will never be a ‘star’.

I am so glad Karise has been given time to develop & not have the record company rush her into inferior albums just to cash in on her ‘fame’.

Hopefully this means she will have longevity in her career.

  5. There are many reality TV show contestants that were huge for a short time and then disappeared from the face of the earth.

And then there are others who capitalised on their ‘fame’ and have become very successful.

For every Guy Sebastian there are 10 Natalie Gaucis.

It’s a shame that the reality tv industry sucks these young talented people and then flushes some down the toilet.

People who enter these shows should brush up on what happens to many of them – and tread wisely or else.

  6. @ Mr. J, The Moops. Yeah completely agree with you guys. The fact is that you have to be very driven for this industry. it also takes luck. I think Samantha Jade will make it. just like Jenny W said she has it all, Looks, Voice, carisma etc. What this article says is that talent shows do not have a good track record when it comes to the winners succeeding. The winner hasto have something different to fit a neich market. THere are alot of rappers, rnb artists, pop stars and so forth.

  7. I disagree that Karise’s approach is not going to help her. I’m glad she is not in everybody’s face all the time, she lets the music speak for her. Hers is a wonderful voice, she just has to grow into her own persona and performer. Look at Altiyan and to some extent Reece Mastin. I would rather them focus on the music.

  8. @Mr J, totally agree. I don’t think Karise understands quite how tiny her window of opportunity is and from what she says, I don’t think she has a hungry enough approach to her career. For winners of talent reality series, their window of opportunity for catching the hearts and minds of the greater public is absolutely miniscule as the (non) careers of Casey Donovan, Kate D’Aruge, Stan Walker, Jack Vidgens and others shows.

  9. It’s baloney how the judges constantly say that. The irony of it all is Emma Pask will be recording an album with Ricky Martin while the winner will be told what to do whilst living on a minimum wage. Remember Casey Donovan? That album was in the $5 discount rack at Sanity a month after she won Idol.

  10. Lol, Camp West Recorders tried to make money from Samantha Jade when they put her unreleased album on iTunes last year after she won X Factor.

I don’t care what anyone says, Samantha Jade deserved to win. She has the “X Factor” (the voice, looks, moves and stage presence).

  11. I don’t think Karise Eden has the right attitude if she wants a decent career in music. these reality show stars have a very small window of opportunity to become a success or they are totally forgotten. I think karise’s window is fast closing, there is no place for ‘freeing experiences’ or ‘working in my own time’ in the business.
