2013-07-23_1847ABC Family has officially cancelled US series Bunheads after just one season.

The series by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) starred Sutton Foster as a Las Vegas showgirl who moves to a small town and becomes a ballet teacher alongside her mother-in-law.

The decision came after the season one finale dropped to around 1 million viewers.

ABC Family said in a statement: “Bunheads is a wonderful series that we are very proud to have aired. The series had amazing storytelling, the most talented cast and a passionate and loyal fan base.

“Recognizing all of this, we took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back for another season, but in the end it simply wasn’t possible. We wish the cast and crew the best in their future endeavors.”

It aired in Australia on FOX8.

ABC Family also axed The Lying Game after two seasons last week.

  3. The second block of episodes of Bunheads lacked direction. Characters coming and going and random scenes that were often quite surreal. I still enjoyed it though.

    I didn’t think much of Twisted. Hopefully Fox8 will put the second block of S1 of Switched at Birth on soon.

  4. I miss Greek but don’t share the disappointment about Kyle XY being cancelled, thought the show was hitting the wall for ideas after Season 2.

    @ Craig. Not really, they’ve been known to hold off making decisions on their borderline shows until they see how their new shows perform. I don’t pay any attention to ratings outside the US network season, but I would assume this cancellation means a pick-up for their winter season is coming for either The Fosters or Twisted.

  5. Tried it, but thought it was just Gilmore Girls-lite. I get the fast-paced dialogue is A-SP’s style and all, but too many elements reminded me of GG, and those elements weren’t as irresistible as GG.

  6. They bring us shows like The Vineyard yet cancel good quality series like Bunheads and The Lying Game plus not to mention other great shows like Kyle XY. Its what i have come to expect from ABC Family though.

  8. @ deedeedragons – couldn’t agree more! With the amount of guest roles Beaver (Aaron Hill) has had recently it has made me miss Greek more and more. I also loved Make It Or Break It, and within a couple of months FOX8 will finish Secret Life =(

  12. Noooooo!!!! I loved this show! Easily one of the best ABC Family dramas ever! Usually cable networks are less likely to axe due to ratings so I was hopeful but this is devastating.
