Renewed: Australia’s Got Talent

Despite middling ratings for the show, a Nine spokesperson confirmed the return of AGT in 2014.

2013-10-27_0055Australia’s Got Talent is coming back in 2014.

Despite middling ratings for the show, a Nine spokesperson confirmed the return to News Corp Australia.

TV Tonight understands Nine has agreed to 2 seasons when it picked up the rights from FremantleMedia Australia.

Last week it pulled 850,000 viewers. But while the show hasn’t managed to “pop” this year, it has attracted some talented acts. However some of them tend to get lost amid an abundance of underwhelming acts, necessitated by too many finals.

A number of acts have also been over-produced, and the format puts too much space in between the audience seeing them return.

Next year AGT will have to air somewhere away from The X Factor, otherwise there’s not much point in doing it at all.

Kyle Sandilands recently told TV Tonight he was up for another season.

“They’re already talking about executing my option for next year so I don’t think they’re going to just throw it in the bin. So it’s not going anywhere as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

“I like doing it. It’s not hard.”

  1. AGT used to be great but Nine turned it into something old and used. When they bring it back they have to freshen it up and give it the UK look if you ask me. I wonder if we’ll see Mel B next year?

  2. The show is a failure. No-one at Nine appears to be accountable. It needs to be put on extended hiatus.

If it is to return (which network would bother, Ten?), it needs to return with better production values (the current video/audio quality is appalling) and more emphasis on the so-called “talent”, rather incessantly zooming in on the “judges” or the contrived reactions from the brain-dead audience.

  3. I’m curious, is there a reason why both the UK and US versions can air live? Is it because the shows have more resources/money/manpower than the Australian version?

  4. Big Brother regular wins or comes second in a variety of demographics, so as David said, based on its ratings, it should be renewed next year. It has a hardcore fan base of around 850 000, which is nothing to sneeze at, especially since it’s on 5 times a week.

  5. The post-show longevity is definitely a problem, especially with the more “Red Faces”-type acts.
It’s interesting, because the Foenander Brothers have a successful circuit career already, same with Raymond Crowe. But I can’t see busking acts being the bulk of the content for long.

Side note: Julia Morris is very good as host, she has come a long way recently.

  6. Hmm. I think this was a mistake. I haven’t been sure about AGT this year. I didn’t watch it last year (then again, no one did) and thought i would give it a go this year. I even thought it might beat XF! But what concerns me is the longevity of many acts post-show. How can they keep ‘rethinking the act’ or ‘doing something new’ each week (as the judges keep saying) when your act is something like juggling? And what viable post-show career options are there for the really weird ones? that and the format, as already mentioned

  7. Actual live shows, over a full week like the UK version would be an exciting way to do it. Also less fluff, more acts, make efficient use of time.

Same day results show would be a great touch but understandably unfeasible due to time zone differences.

  8. This doesn’t suprise me, and neither would a BB renewal. I’m not confident Nine would have enough content to fill this part of the year in 2014 if they cancelled the two. Nine dont have a lot of hits compared to Seven, so until that day comes they can’t really afford to let them go. AGT started off well, so there probably was potential had the show not aired against X Factor.

    1. I’ve named names before. Uncle Jed are sublime and hope they win. Surprised to say I enjoyed the Foendender Bros. Some of the group tumbling / athletics has been excellent. But then we have stupid Salty Rain or weird acts with fruit and food. What kind of career can they have? Don’t get it.

  9. They should stick with it. The xfactor failed on ch10, struggled a little at first on ch7 and now it is flying. Revise, refine and improve, I bet ch10 wish they could pull 850,000 for a show….

  10. Sounds like they made a blunder signing a contract for two seasons. But I wonder if they are contractually obliged to go full scale production. A diet version might do the format some justice.

Next year keep Geri, she’s been the surprise performer. Dump timomatic and maybe dawn, 3 on the panel is enough.

  11. Great news about renewal & David you are right about the format & scheduling changes.
I don’t see why it couldn’t be on a Saturday night. Nine would do well on that night as the only competition is the ABC.
No reason why Sat night can’t become event tv night like in the UK where X Factor & Strictly Come Dancing are shown.

  12. Scheduling has clearly been it’s downfall going up firstly against The Voice when on 7 and then the roles being reversed with The X Factor this year.

With schedules tight going the UK route and having all the live shows over one week would make a lot of a sense – and make it a bit of an event for Nine rather than just another talent show.
