The Observer Effect: Oct 6

Ellen Fanning talks to Christmas Island administrator Jon Stanhope and Puberty Blues co-author Kathy Lette.

2013-10-04_1921This weekend on The Observer Effect Ellen Fanning talks to Christmas Island administrator Jon Stanhope and Puberty Blues co-author Kathy Lette.

Following his recent threats to quit as Christmas Island administrator if the Abbott government stops residents talking about asylum-seeker arrivals, Jon Stanhope joins Ellen Fanning on The Observer Effect to discuss the Prime Minister’s ‘information blackout’ policy and the week’s biggest news stories.

Stanhope recently told ABC Radio he “would seriously have to consider my position” if Christmas Island residents were told not to speak freely about boat arrivals in the area. As the Prime Minister’s position on asylum seekers continues to evolve, Fanning will also talk to the ACT’s longest running Chief Minister about how Labor’s lack of leadership from within his party led to election defeat.

Fanning is also joined by legendary Puberty Blues author Kathy Lette who opened up this week about her autistic son Julius, the inspiration for her latest book The Boy Who Fell To Earth.

The ever-outspoken Lette will discuss life with her son, her maverick career, and the stories that have affected her over the past week.

Sunday 6 October at 8.30pm on SBS ONE.

  1. Jon Stanhope’s comments were inspirational and a challenge to Australians to look beyond the base rhetoric that has dominated the political arguments about Asylum seekers. Thank god finally for a public figure with a clear moral compass and the guts to speak out and show leadership.
