Seven signs Hopman Cup

For the first time every session will be broadcast Live and free to air in HD -including in Perth.

2013-11-25_0945Seven has signed  the Hopman Cup, after TEN ended its broadcast deal.

For the first time every session will be broadcast Live and free-to-air nationally (including in Perth) in high definition on 7mate, with the option of marquee matches to be televised live on Seven.

“We are delighted to be expanding our commitment to tennis across the summer and importantly delivering live coverage of the Hyundai Hopman Cup on our broadcast television platform,” Saul Shtein, Seven’s Head of Sport, said.

“Seven is committed to building its presence in sports across Seven, 7TWO and 7mate. We are driving home our leadership across three channels. The addition of the Hyundai Hopman Cup to our new Australian Open broadcast agreement adds further depth to our impressive portfolio of major sports events and further underlines our partnership with tennis in Australia, on television and across new forms of content delivery, including online, mobile and HBBTV.”

The event begins takes place from 28 December 2013 to 4 January 2014 at Perth Arena.

“We’re excited to see the Hyundai Hopman Cup build a relationship with Seven, a long term partner of Australian tennis,” said Tournament Director Paul Kilderry. “Now fans will have the opportunity to watch all the action live and free in Perth and around Australia as we continue to grow the event’s audience domestically. The strength of the 2014 field will complement Seven’s lead- in coverage to the Australian Open.”

Seven’s major tennis tournaments also include  The Australian Open,  The Davis Cup and the exclusive broadcast television rights to Wimbledon.

  1. Ten were right to dump it as it barely rated at all for the 2013 Hopman Cup as it didn’t crack Top 20 at all. So I say it is a bad move from 7 unless if I am proven wrong here that it rates more than what it got on Ten

  2. Who cares where it goes on FTA, Hopman Cup just doesn’t rate, have a good look at ratings over the past few years.

It never rated well on ABC, rated very poorly when show on 10 or 1.

It Won’t rate at all on 7 or 7 Mate.

  3. Well done Seven. And Live. That’s how you do it Ten, once again they drop the ball. Hopman Cup is my fave tournament, and i think Seven will give it the coverage it deserves and help it grow.

  4. Great to have it broadcast in HD we have been behind other countries when it comes to HD unless you have Foxtel which is a great addition. But it was great to see SBS is the first station on channel 30 to go full HD.Any gossip David in perhaps when other channels may follow suit.Because we all know this is the future

  5. Once again ch10 let something go and ch7 will probably turn it into another relative ratings success. Live sport is one of the required pillars to survive as a fta broadcaster in the internet age. Yeah I know they have the big bash, but they also have 3 channels to fill.

  6. @dwuuuu the impression I got from this is that Fox no longer cover the Hopman Cup at all.

@Maev there’s 16 channels these days. Surely they’re not all sport??

@kimbeth I’d be surprised if Fox lost the Wimbledon rights but this kinda gives that impression, doesn’t it?

  7. @Guy Yes please would love to see the French and US opens on FTA! They dont have to send commentry teams to them either just have another the British or US commentry team do it for us and have Todd Woodbridge covering it from Aus (like Davis Cup)

  8. Wow 7 really can’t win with these comments..they put these smaller events on the secondary channels then at least u have alternative content on the main one. This also means they won’t have to burn through their summer shows like they did previously eg. Eli Stone

  9. Exclusive Wimbledon coverage? Fox sports had coverage this year, so I’m assuming they’ve lost the rights for 2014? So much US sport on fox now and not much in the way of top tier sports.

  10. Another inexplicable decision on sports rights by TEN. Another opportunity for cross promotion lost. No wonder few people bother to watch TEN any more. I would like to see a complete list of sports TEN have had & given away over the years going back to the early days when they showed NRL.

  11. Wall to wall sport…great if you are a sport fanatic….not so great for those of us that would like alternate viewing…
I enjoy watching some sports…but it seems we are sports obsessed…all over many channels…
I fear more armchair sports persons…than participants…yes..I am included in that!

  12. As another commenter on the previous story about Hopman Cup broadcasts said the 7 Network had won the rights. Glad it was confirmed. I dont think it will clash with the other tournaments. 7Two broadcasts the Brisbane International, then the Sydney International and then later Kooyong Classic. 7 broadcasts those tournaments if there is a clash i think. Hopman Cup being on 7Mate will make sense finally a propper use of the HD channel, if it is successfull in the ratings (yes that word in this case is a relative term) then i think Seven will use Mate for the Australian Open telecasts more in the future.

  13. Good on them for picking it up but will it be shot in HD or is it just on 73 because Seven don’t want to interrupt rusted-on audiences on the other two channels?

  14. i would have thought 9 would be interested, this would be a great opportunity for them to build up some profile in Perth.

but a good get for 7, this has been increasing in popularity in the years it was on ten, seems ten fattened the pig but 7 are the ones eating the pork.

  15. So what will happen to coverage of the Brisbane International? Will it have to share coverage with the Hopman Cup? Surely with Federer, Sharapova & Serena Williams the Brisbane tournament is the better tournament & will get priority.

  16. What ABC creativity?

The ABC outsources creativity along with the rest of show production these days. Most of it has come from Andrew Denton who has banked his millions from the ABC and retired.

Crownies is a textbook example. The ABC specified a drama about the legal cases and private lives of young progressive professionals in the DPP, with a token muslim for diversity. IT went to Screen Time who ticked those boxes and came up with something spectacularly bland and uninteresting.

The one interesting character was Janet King whom they moved to a spin off, which they then sat on for nearly 3 years until it airs in 2014.

  17. Ten are the biggest losers here – once again Seven shows how to use a digital channel wisely. How sad that they had most of this content and then just let it go.. Golf / AFL / now Tennis.. so sad..

  18. Great news. Love the Hopman Cup and Seven is showing the rest of the networks how its done when it comes to sport. They have been really good this year having sometimes up to 3 sports on the 3 channels all at once. Its moving forward in the right direction and also it will be great to see every match Live on FTA too. All we need now is to see the US Open and French Open live on FTA now. Yes they are not huge raters but if you use the digital channel for them then it could work well.

  19. “For the first time every session will be broadcast Live and free to air in HD -including in Perth.” i.e. it won’t rate well enough to put it on 7 or even 72 or damage the ticket sales.

Ten lost the bid for the major tournaments. So they get no benefit from the Hopman Cup and any flow on effects go to Seven’s Sydney and Brisbane tournament coverage on 72 or The Australian Open on 7.

It makes more sense for Seven to screen it on 73 where will support the rest of their Summer of Tennis. The ABC only ended up with it in the first place because it didn’t rate high enough to be on Seven, even at Christmas time.

    .

  20. Well done Seven – you are leading the way to premium sport on multichannels and generally marketing your collective channels best in market.

Ten should have retained…another simple error which would have had no exposure !
