In a nutshell, here's how the results have stacked up.

Literally on this first day of summer, the summer non-ratings period begins. It proceeds until February 8th 2014.

Tomorrow we’ll look at how the network numbers stack up in detail.

But here it is in a nutshell:

Seven has won Total People and the most survey weeks.

Nine has won all 3 key demos.

ABC has snatched third place in Total People.

TEN has gone down.

Seven and Nine have increased their shares due to TEN decreasing.

More to come tomorrow.

  1. @chivasssimo – you do have a point but it is not 7’s fault that viewers would tune in regardless of the quality of their shows. Just like 9, they will continue to repeat episodes of TBBT when viewers continue to watch them. These commercial stations are only reacting to the viewers’ needs. You may not agree with their programming decisions but you can’t blame them if the so called horrible shows (in your opinion) keep bringing in viewers. I don’t think 7 was being arrogant (how good are we persona) – no less than 9. Have you read some of 9’s ratings report? I am not a 100% 7 fan but I can’t help observing that some people are contracting the so called Tall Poppy Syndrome.

  2. Can somebody explain to me the reason for Murdoch wanting to buy ten and rename it fox. I can’t see the benefit. At the end of the day it has to make money and everything that has been done by him and his management has destroyed it and made huge losses.

  3. @BradleyB – Nine also has a raft of first-run programming over Summer. On Nine is Summer with The Australian Women’s Weekly, Christmas with The Australian Women’s Weekly, The Ashes, Carols by Candlelight, The Mentalist, Weeds, 2 Broke Girls, Super Fun Night, CSI, Dallas, Person of Interest, CSI: NY.

First run content on GO! includes The 2013 Arias, The Crew, The Bachelor, The Originals, Survivor: Blood vs. Water, Teen Mum, The Middle, Sun Sex & Suspicious Parents, Magaluf Weekender.

  4. TheTvGuru: I’m with you. I suppose it’ll be like this for whoever is coming first, but I’m sick of Seven’s “how good are we” persona. Craig: really hope so. JBar and others: Seven are depriving tv of intense competition because there are people who just watch whatever is on seven. Goes back to the proposition that if some of seven’s shows were on ten, they would flop. (Obviously not X factor, I’m talking more like BATG)

  5. Maybe its just treating your viewers with respect and not stuffing around the schedules?

Seven is running new prime-time high-rating content during non-ratings – eg Bones is new (At least this week and next), and they’re keeping the Blacklist as fast tracked (Tuesday’s episode is < 24 hours after the US, and is their last til Jan)

Plus new lower-rating late night content – eg Suits S3 starts this week (and with 2 episodes from next week)

In contrast, Ch 9 stopped showing new BBT before ratings finished, and 10 never even started shows like the good wife/simpsons – it just feels like they gave up early.

  6. @TheTvGuru – know what you are trying to get at!

In a nutshell the ratings came down to a single thing! its not quality programming, its not raw talent, it is simply the networks that spent the most, got the most ratings! Pure & simple
the more we wish for the demise of the 3rd FTA network the poorer we the viewing public will be. The more 7&9 gain power and control the less original and different content we will be exposed too! excluding left leaning and green orientated stories from Govt broadcaster.

  7. I think a win is a win and credit should be given to 7 for trying. Someone on this site says exclude the west coasts, well, if we are all trying to be fair, then why not exclude all the repeated BBT episodes from 9? Then, we can see who will come out on top?

  8. Ten made some very bizarre decisions in 2013. No idea why they didn’t screen the second series of the critically acclaimed Puberty Blues. Scheduling The Bachelor directly against X Factor and AGT was suicide. It should have been launched midweek. Wanted could have been a hit if scheduled Wed/Thurs.

  9. I guess Ten wins the christmas turkey raffle this year. I’m convinced Lachlan Murdoch is running Ten into the ground on purpose to ensure a cheap sale to his Daddy. I think when Ten goes into receivership the government will quickly change its mind and allow him to buy it. Surely the banks won’t keep lending them money for another two years.

  10. Seven are winning most of the time only with help from the totally dominant Adelaide & Perth stations. Take these 2 cities out of the equation & the results between Seven & Nine would be a lot closer.
Would love to see ratings figures for all of Australia rather than 5 cities only. That is the real test of any network.

  11. @TheTvGuru so Seven at #1 is bad for competition but Nine at #1 is ok? How does that further your argument re competition.

And a previous comment is right, It’s more like Ten that is depriving competition by turning TV into a two way battle between 7 and 9. Like Mean Girls in midweek prime time… Yawn

  12. @TheTVGuru

Seems you don’t know how Australian TV works. Seven aggressively schedule good product all year round. Nine seem to shove The Big Bang Theory in anywhere and everywhere while TEN have been a massive disappointment. Seven are not making them fail, the others are because of the way they treat their viewers.

Seven are not perfect either. They’ve had a few duds in The Mole and Celebrity Splash just to name 2 but they keep their viewers honest. The only big issue i have with them is the continual running late but all networks are guilty of this and IMO this needs to stop. The other big issue i think they need to address is the loss of their News service on the East Coast to Nine. Even Brisbane lost this year, even if it was down to the wire. Seven need to pick up their game. A major relaunch nationally i think is what they need and they need to stop putting Today Tonight…

  13. There is only one thing that is working at the moment.

Build a base with quiz shows and news and current affairs. Then run a PG contest show that everybody watches live and use that a lead in for a drama, staggering you show across the competition. The idea being to get viewers to skip, timeshift or catch-up the good shows on your competition.

You then use breakfast, sport and special events to get people watching your network so you can promote your lineup.

    Seven is doing it best.

Nine has stuff like TBBT and Arrow from it WB deal, plus owns the franchises for BB and The Voice so it wins the younger demographics and keeps in touch with Seven in terms of revenue share.

The ABC spends a fortune on news and current affairs and buys UK and kids shows. So it wins with under 12s and over 55s and does well enough overall to run 3rd.

Ten used to do very well counter…

  14. I hope to see a more competitive ratings battle in 2014 between Seven, Nine and Ten. Getting a bit sick of seeing the same results week after week. However, I doubt Nine’s overload on The Block, The Voice and Big Bang will improve the situation, nor will Ten’s damaged brand and silly programming decisions.

  15. Congratulation channel 7 you deserve the win as you cater for all ages in your programming. TheTvGuru has his head buried in the sand, channel 9 rely too much on repeats to keep afloat like TBBT 9-10 timer per week across their multi channels, then two series on The Block, 2 series on the voice/kids, obviously nothing else to show the viewers, hope that channel 10 can pick up next year, and congratulations too to ABC, they are putting some great programmes on these days. .

  16. So we are now in the non-ratings period?

I guess that means everything on TV tonight will be repeats.

Won’t be rushing home to catch a new ep of Modern Family then.

And is Ten going to screen The Good Wife during the non-ratings period or are we going to have to wait until after the Winter Olympics?

I believe they are halfway through season 4 in the US and the critics have been raving how great the show is.

Shame Ten screwed that program around. It was a weekly guessing game to see where and when it would be on.

And my predix for next year? Nine and Seven will continue to battle for first and second place. Even with the Winter Olympics, Ten will be hoping that the Opening and Closing ceremonies might give them a win… but I think Nine and Seven will thrown MKR and Voice at them. And we know those shows are ratings juggernauts.

  17. It’s getting monotonous hearing about all the great shows on Ten and what idiots all those who don’t watch them are. A one off or a series may be well made and acted, watched overseas and even win awards, but if the content appeals to Americans, that does not mean it will or should appeal to Australians.
A good example is Homeland. It never appealed to me so I stopped watching it. Despite a minority insisting it is quality television, the majority eventually turned off as well.

There are many other shows where the same applies. Seven and Nine seem to be aware of what their viewers want and in most cases are providing it, albeit it being nothing but rubbish quite often. I believe the worm will eventually turn, so until then, please learn to live with it, although it may take time.
I am of the opinion however, TEN may not be around to see it all happen.

  18. @TheTvGuru – “Seven has won Total People and the most survey weeks”.
“Seven are making Aussie tv fail, they are depriving it of intense competition,”
And Nine’s idea if “intense competition” is 3 eps of Big Bang Theory.

  19. @TheTvGuru How are Seven depriving TV of intense competition? If anything it’s Ten that is depriving us from intense competition by making so many wrong or bad scheduling decisions and bad programming.

  20. Yeah, I’d like to see 9 back on top too. Hope ch 10 can pick up some more too, they have some great shows which are huge hits overseas, but for some reason don’t rate well here.

  21. Seven are making Aussie tv fail, they are depriving it of intense competition, I know that’s the idea, but tv isn’t intense for competition anymore.
Will be happy when 9 takes back the #1 spot, whenever that’ll happen, but it will likely do so
