CBS picks up new music show from Nigel Lythgoe

This one puts a spotlight on singers for just 20 seconds each.

2014-02-16_0131US network CBS is entering the music competition reality series space with a new format from Nigel Lythgoe, called In the Spotlight.

Lythgoe, who has produced both American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance will produced the series based on a Turkish format, which is yet to air.

In the Turkish format, Keep Your Light Shining, 12 contestants appear on a dark circular stage with a moving spotlight, with them taking turns to sing as the spotlight shines on them for 15-20 seconds. Each round, one contestant is eliminated by the audience, with the show also featuring a panel of celebrity judges.

The CBS version is understood to have undergone some changes.

CBS is yet to enter the music talent arena in a big way, with shows such as American Idol, The X Factor, The Voice and the upcoming Rising Star all appearing on rival networks.

You can see a clip here that was obviously part of its trade pitch. Looks like Logan’s Run meets Idol. There’s even an X Factor shot of RedFoo when they promise “no fancy vocal coaches.”

  1. I like the concept, but it would definitely need changes for the Aussie market. I could imagine it getting pretty repetitive so they would probably have different themes every episode, like they used to on Aus Idol Top 12 episodes. A home viewer vote would also have to be integrated. Perhaps by downloading an app and paying $1 to vote for the entire episode.

I can’t imagine Aussie networks picking it up though because it’s a “one episode a week” kind of show, so they won’t be able to milk it for all it’s worth, and stretch it across their schedule, so they’ll pass on it.

  2. Moving chairs, now a moving spotlight. What’s next. The best format was Idol, they auditioned thousands and came up with the best singers who are still very successful (especially those from American Idol) Can’t say the same about the other reality talent shows.

  3. I don’t like this one bit because who is going to watch it if it doesn’t involve the viewer at home. It just seems stupid to me and has no point to it. Kinda like the fail show Everybody Dance Now where it left the viewer at home out.

  4. There has been many famous singers that have started out as backup singers…. they have to start somewhere and being backup is one foot into the business. So i think many people would jump at the chance to have that opportunity.

  5. No no no. Don’t need anymore of these shows right now. I don’t like the final price and i really don’t like the look of this show after watching that preview.

  6. I actually quite like this, and the idea of it showing bin Australia, it’s very original and one of our struggl ing channels should consider picking it up,
I don’t however like the final price, I don’t think anyone really dreams of being someone else’s back-up :/
