Renewed: Lewis

ITV has finally renewed Lewis for an eighth season, despite speculation the seventh would be the last.

2014-02-11_1305ITV has finally renewed UK detective series Lewis for an eighth season.

It follows some speculation that the seventh season would be final.

The Morse sequel, starring Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox, will return with six new episodes.

TV Wise reports in the show’s eighth season, Hathaway, following an extended break from the police, has been promoted to the rank of Detective Inspector. But when the chemistry that existed with Lewis eludes Hathaway, the now retired Lewis is drafted back to renew their partnership.

“Viewers have a great deal of respect for Inspector Lewis and a huge loyalty to Kevin Whately,” said ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November. “Together with Laurence, he has forged a formidable partnership and we’re delighted to have them back on ITV.”

Executive Producer Michele Buck added: “Lewis has a special place in the hearts of the ITV audience. Each story is intriguing and complex and viewers relish the fine writing, acting and excellent production values.”

The news also also comes after the successful launch of Morse prequel Endeavour.

Production on the new season of Lewis is slated to commence in March and airs in the UK in 2015.

  1. Just a note of interest I’ve been watching the superb The Thick of It, there’s a line in which Roger Allam’s character states he’s Morse to his coalition partner’s Lewis. After The Thick of It finished Roger Allam got the role of Morse’s superior officer in the prequel Endeavour.

  2. 6 episodes is actually 3 (Instead of the 4 they use to make each year). ITV started showing them as 45 minute half mystery episodes last year.

And of course Seven has been sitting on S6 of Lewis for over a year. Hopefully they are planning to show them with the second series of Endeavour, when that becomes available.

In the meantime in their usual Saturday night Mystery slot 72 has dumped repeats of ten year of Inspector Lynley episodes mid run — and replaced them with more repeats of the even older Frost.
