Two-horse race ends first quarter of ratings race

Ratings: With the first quarter of ratings over how have our networks fared in the 2014 race?

2014-04-13_1854_001Seven and Nine end the first 9 weeks of ratings in a death-battle for Total People, split by just 0.6% last week.

But Seven has won all 9 weeks in Total People. While both in Week 14, Seven lifted in Timeshifted numbers to take the week.

Meanwhile this graph of Overnight shares in Total People indicates the challenge for other networks, especially TEN, which began well due to the Winter Olympics, and SBS (NB: Please note Consolidated figures would have resulted in some minor changes).

With The Block‘s finale, last week was the week Nine really should have won. But Seven performed better than expected and took yet another week.

Network:
Seven: 32.1
Nine: 31.5
ABC: 17.0
TEN: 14.7
SBS: 4.8

The Block was the top show for the week with the Winner Announced at 2.18m viewers. Best for My Kitchen Rules was Tuesday at 1.67m viewers.

With the various coding that went on (including 3 titles for The Block‘s finale), Reality Television -unbelievably- dominated top 10 places in the ratings week.

  1. Nine as a network have halved the gap from 2013.
And the reason Seven is winning is because 7Mate is outrating Gem.

Nine’s main channel has been Seven often and has a younger audience profile, so the share of advertising dollars should be similar (which is what Nine care about most). .

  2. @Mr J – The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics had decent ratings on the TEN Network. Channel Ten’s Sochi Games rated well than Nine’s Vancouver 2010 Games. Did you remember that Channel Nine’s Vancouver Winter Games turned from bad to worse? Channel Nine’s Winter Olympics had poor ratings and poor coverage – no live coverage in Perth. On the other side, One rated quite well in network shares. Channel Ten has done a better job than Channel Nine’s Winter Olympic Games.
Hope that SBS will have strong ratings in Eurovision as well as the FIFA WC and TDF. The FIFA World Cup will rate well despite being 11 hours behind Brazil. I am predicting that there will be 1.7 million viewers from AUS watching the World Cup Event. I hope that SBS will beat Channel Ten at the end of the 2014 ratings season. Channel Ten went from bad to worse despite a few good ratings like F1 GP.

  3. ten invested so much in launching their first quarter with Big Bash and Winter Olympics. If their ratings had matched last years performance it would have been a terrible result, so the fact that they have done significantly worse is an disaster.

  4. @Shoudy Chen, I agree, if SBS plays their cards right, launching shows off FIFA WC, eurovision and the tour de france we could see them scoring some regular 4ths.

  5. I have seen a slight improvement in SBS. With the FIFA World Cup months away, this should draw strong ratings. That might push SBS into 4th place.

im sure David is flat out doing more important things than making more graphs… its not your personal little website where you can ask for those things…im sure if he had more graphs he’d post them
