Police to investigate Packer-Gyngell brawl

Police have launched an investigation into that infamous street brawl yesterday. Or maybe just sort it out on The Voice Battle Rounds?

vbat2Police in Bondi have launched an investigation into the infamous street brawl yesterday between casino boss and TEN shareholder James Packer and Nine CEO David Gyngell.

“Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command has commenced an investigation into an incident that occurred about 2pm Sunday on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road near the intersection of Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach,” a spokesman said.

“Police have not yet received an official complaint but have appealed to any one who witnessed, or has vision or images of the incident, to contact Eastern Suburbs LAC on 9369 9899.”

The stoush has attracted national media coverage and international reportage, while News Corporation has reportedly paid a six figure sum for photos and videos. Headlines and coverage have been busy with the lingo: “Billionaire biffo,” “James Whacker,” “Clash of the titans,” “Packin’ a punch” and the priceless NT News headline “Why I’ve Got A Packer Up My Clacker.”

Both men issued a three-sentence joint statement yesterday indicating:

We have been friends for 35 years and still are.

In that time we have had our fair share of ups and downs.

We respect each other and neither of us will be commenting further.

Today a Nine spokesman told Guardian Australia, “We of course respect the job the police do and will co-operate fully with their investigation.”

No mention of  The Voice Battle Rounds coming up soon, to decide this thing once and for all…

  1. Gyngell is falling on his sword…saying his fault, he was angry and threw the 1st punch…but it takes two to make a boxing match…Packer could have drawn back, been the sensible one…he had security guards who could have fended off the other guy….bad as each other…they look like totally the worst of Sydney westies…and I know…I live here….
Not watching anymore TV news until it passes…simply annoying me!

  2. @ Secret Squirrel

You raise the LAC and Stats in your comment, but we must remember these two friendly?? combatants are from a different class level to most of us, and the delayed politically motivated response( new premier, new police minister and the woes of ICAC, unsurprisingly now called A Star Chamber by non ‘labor’ targets), assigned to no doubt very experienced investigators, possibly even ‘specialists investigators’, specializing in high profile tokenism sometimes associated amid our well established different sets of rules, in a growing ‘them and us society’.

So to slightly expand your use of LAC and Stats, may I suggest ‘SLAC, Statts’ (ie Statistical Tokenism)

  3. Obviously the Eastern Suburbs LAC smells the possibility of an easy conviction to boost their stats. It was unseemly but none of the parties involved have decided to press charges. What a waste of police resources.

  4. Imagine David going home to Leila and explaining what happened.

Its lucky no one was seriously hurt but seriously 2 grown men who have the high profile they have in there 40’s should no better.

  5. If the story in the herald is right and gyngel is in the wrong and could be sent to prison for 10 years I take it all back. Get the police around now and have him arrested.

  6. The same James Packer who was hand-picked by PM Abbott to assist in representing Oz in China, Japan & South Korea recently? Makes ya proud to realize that the adults are back in charge of this country, doesn’t it?

  7. A good thing too, we can’t have unemployed neer-do-wells lowering Bondi property prices by brawling like animals in heat on the streets. They pour in from the Western suburbs, and NZ, you know, living off the dole we pay for! Lock the drongoes up and throw away the key I say, these louts are ruining the joint. Think of the kiddies.

What? Oh dear… You mean? Okay, so nothing to see here. Damn the press for blowing this harmless little tiff out of all proportion. Why can’t they leave these poor rich people alone?

  8. What is funny about this is the police asking for pictures of the fight, why don’t they just buy the newspaper or check out the internet news sites for the pictures.

  9. This is what we need the limited police resources on.

The only winner here will be the media because the story will continue rather than dieing today.
