Ian Thorpe signs to TEN’s Commonwealth Games team

Ian Thorpe will commentate swimming and co-anchor TEN’s prime-time coverage in Glasgow.

2014-06-27_2230As rumoured some weeks ago, Ian Thorpe is joining TEN’s Commonwealth Games commentary team in Glasgow.

He will commentate swimming and co-anchor coverage with Mel McLaughlin.

The move will likely attract plenty of attention given the Olympic champ has been in the headlines of late for health reasons.

“TEN have been great so far and I am looking forward to getting back into work following my shoulder surgery,” he said.

“I have some very fond memories of the Commonwealth Games. They were a big part of my career. The atmosphere in Glasgow will be electric and I am looking forward to being a part of it again, obviously in a different capacity this time around, and sharing my insights with the fans at home.”

TEN’s head of sport David Barham, said: “We are honoured and excited that Ian has agreed to join our commentary team. Ian received global acclaim for his commentary of the 2012 London Olympics with the BBC and is one of the most successful athletes of all time. We can’t wait to share him with viewers around the country.”

  1. The Commonwealth Games normally attracts Gold, Gold, Gold…given on the Commonwealth are on stage .

Lets see if Ten can produce some Gold or if they can’t !

  2. Not sure even with Thorpey, it will make a world of difference to the ratings ….. the Commonwealth games have never been a big rater, and especially with the time difference, it could be even less of a rater ……

  3. Hopefully Ten’s main channel programming will be more competitive than it was during Sochi and could help bolster their network share over the two weeks.
