Project top heavy with self-promos

Grant Denyer, Tom Gleisner and Andrew Bolt in one Project show equals a lot of cross-promo for 1 hour.

proj10I’m hoping we don’t see The Project turn into a lengthy cross-promo vehicle for TEN.

Last night there were three TEN brands on the show: Grant Denyer for Family Feud, Tom Gleisner for Have You Been Paying Attention? and Bolt Report host Andrew Bolt.

The latter was clearly relevant to the news of the day, given the comments by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, but the other two items struggled to disguise their agenda.

Gleisner was asked to explain the premise of his show, and asked such riveting questions as to who was on the show that very night. With references to Frontline with Ray Martin at the desk it was a shame Rob Sitch wasn’t there to channel a bit of Mike Moore. That would have been telly heaven (along with a bit more of Tom’s line about pointless current affairs standards).

Grant Denyer gave us the spiel on the upcoming Family Feud and a call for contestants. At least he was asked about recent drug allegations, given these have been in the news.

But while the Project has always stood its ground as offering a network “right of reply,” and used cross-promos before, three TEN brands in one show is really tipping the scales.

On a brighter note, the stoush between Peter Helliar and Steve Price about comedy vs journalism was the highlight of the show. More of that please.

  1. I’ve been watching the late night repeat of The Project for the last couple of weeks since the axing of Ten’s late news (I’m usually not home from work to see the early evening editions and I need a news fix at the end of the day) and to be honest I’ve been really enjoying it. I’m loving seeing Ray Martin in a hosting position again. I think the show has really benefited from having him on. He bring a lot of news credibility to the show.
In regards to the cross promotion the other night, I didn’t really mind it. If they did it every night then it might get annoying, but if they just do it every now and then when they’ve got a show worthy of talking about then I don’t see any problem with it.

  2. @ditto – To suggest David may have an agenda is way over the top. He clearly criticises other networks when needed. The Bolt story was valid. It was the story of the day and being a TEN man, they would of been crazy not to have him on. The Denyer segment was 50/50 and the Tom Gleisner segment was pure cross promotion. One of the last two should of been on on a different night. I love The Project and hope the producers of the show tell Peter Meakin to butt out if he tries to interfere too much. I also like the rotation of hosts at the moment. It is keeping it fresh. I also hope they use Ray and Kate on a regular basis.

But doesn’t the very fact that others do it,possibly make it even worse, nor does it not mean its right or accepted very well by viewers?

I did not watch it because our u-beaut digital signal was missing in action once again, but I doubt the appearance of ‘Sir Andrew Bolt’ was intended as a cross promotion exercise.

But more likely his appearance was to keep the Abbott/Turnbull B/S leadership beat-up on the boil, that coincidentally and ‘very conveniently’ surfaced virtually on the eve of Mr Abbott’s departure overseas, ironically for the ‘ D-Day’ ceremonies.

But back at home in Oz the ‘Sir Andrew Bolt’ leadership beat-up B/S, and where Mr Abbott himself politicized ‘D-Day’ so much so that the ‘D’ in ‘D-Day’ is now obviously ‘ Distraction’ from a cruel and ideological budget ‘disaster'( to use Mr Abbott favourite word)

  4. David you must really have it in for TEN. They are usually criticised (and have been by yourself) for not having the morning shows/ opportunities to cross promote their prime time as 7 & 9 do?
Given Bolt was in the News that day across all networks… and the Denyer/Feud announcement made headlines.. including a damning article by yourself.. you’d think they’d be worthy stories for The Project.
Dear me, perhaps you have an agenda you’re not disguising very well.

    1. Ditto, your criticism is very easy to address:

I raised a concern about 3 TEN brands in one hour just as I would if I had seen 3 Seven brands on Sunday Night or 3 Nine brands on 60 Minutes (I recently said a Ricky Martin yarn on 60 Minutes didn’t do much for me other than plug The Voice, and that was just 1 cross-promo). The article clearly acknowledged the relevance of the Bolt issue. I also wrote this as a concern, not as a hanging offence. The Project team are well aware of supportive articles for what is a pretty good show. I stand by other articles questioning decisions on Family Feud and I Wanna Marry Harry. I also stand by the feature interviews recently of late for Offspring, MasterChef, Have You Been Paying Attention?, So You Think You Can Dance Aus, Studio 10, Wake Up, Bondi Rescue etc. or recent comments that TEN actually has very good shows, or today’s Daily Pick for The Good Wife. I have my name on over 30,000 articles here so I have no issue with my work speaking for itself. This contrasts with anonymous allegations that don’t stand up to analysis. If I search for comments from your email over time many are supportive of TEN, yet apparently I am the one unable to disguise my agenda. I will leave you with this comment you made under a previous ID: “David don’t waste your time responding to the complainers, you’re doing a good job reporting on relevant info… so cheers.”

  5. When I heard Andrew bolts name mentioned i switched channels . Ten biggest liability is Andrew bolt .get rid of that right wing fool and the stations ratings will start to go up.

  6. I did not watch as Grant Denyer was on…and he stresses me…did not know about the other two…but not interested in their shows either…so glad I gave it a miss this time.
I do like the rotation of the presenters though.

  7. Today and Sunrise are even worse offenders at doing this. Every morning before 8am they do stories on their network reality shows. It annoys me as I don’t watch them.

  8. While this was an extraordinary amount of self-promotion, you could easily criticise Ten for usually lacking the skill to cross-promote effectively. How long has HYBPA been on air? Six months? And this was the first time they had the host on as a guest and probably only the second time they ever talked about it.
