TEN goes back to the future with Family Feud reboot

TEN turns to a recycled format and host in a move that reeks of a lack of imagination.

2014-06-01_0039TEN has confirmed its 6pm entertainment show will be a revival of Family Feud.

The revival from FremantleMedia had been rumoured as late as last year but News Corp reports TEN has signed Grant Denyer as its host.

Both are a surprising move as the network seeks to shore up its numbers against Seven and Nine news bulletins.

Family Feud has a long history on Australian television dating back to 1977, but aside from new hosts and sets has arguably remained an old-fashioned format.

Grant Denyer, who quit Million Dollar Minute citing its “gruelling” schedule is also on record as saying he never “ever wanted to be a game show host.”

Today he tells News Corp “But in my defence, I don’t see this show in the same frame as the usual game show. It’s less formal.”

If Family Feud isn’t a decidedly usual game show, I don’t know what is, Grant.

Even The Rich List managed to take the same concept of audience-survey lists and find a more contemporary way of packaging it. And that was seven years ago.

Denyer, who was last in the news over allegations of drug rehabilitation, says he is pursuing legal action against Woman’s Day magazine, and sees the new show as a “fresh start.”

But this news reeks of a lack of imagination. If this is the best TEN’s brains trust can come up with for 6:00 then it’s probably time to hoist the white flag.

Or Homer Simpson.

  1. @Cam Reed – I hope not, as Ten’s commentary team will be a disaster with him in the pits. I am too young to know about how long he lasted but I think he didn’t last that long. I would prefer Ten’s commentary team as Rusty, Daryl, Matt White, Crompo, Larko and Riana for most part with Mel and Mark Howard at Bathurst.

  2. After reading all these comments I hope ten have signed one of those”Stephens” contract with Grant!! It’s not sounding promising!!

  3. Okay Million Dollar Minute has done better with Simon Reeve at the helm, so that also puts a question mark on having Grant Denyer host for mine.

I wonder if this is part of a bigger play, like for one getting Denyer over to TEN, so as they can also use him for the V8 Supercars when they start broadcasting next year (he was a TEN before as there V8 Supercar pit reporter).

  4. I think that Charlie Pickering would be a better host than Grant Denyer. Last year Grant Denyer had a terrible reputation on Channel 7.

  5. 2nd comment Russell whilst making a fair point, needs to look at the difference between Steve Harvey and Grant Denyer. I’ve just come back from there and caught a few episodes, Steve Harvey is a quality host.

    Grant Denyer is not.

  6. @JdLdn

The Cube, an original idea? It’s a rip off of Minute to Win It.

I like the idea here (provide something different from the others) and if it’s done right it could be a winner.

  7. A friend told me TEN was bringing back Family Feud this morning, and I burst out laughing. Then they told me Grant Denyer was to host it, and I nearly wet myself. I hope The Project doesn’t suffer from the lead-in. Maybe Grant should host an Aussie version of Whose Line Is It Anyway .

  8. Bah-bow. Tough crowd round here.

I think it’s actually an inspired idea. Better than reality TV or imported re-runs – isn’t that what we’ve been asking for, something different?

It’s obviously never going to beat the news. Ten wouldn’t expect it to.

The game itself is light and fun, and is enjoying enormous success in the US. Grant’s no comedian, but he’s likeable enough and brings a bit of goofy dag factor.

Oldies love it. There’s a whole demo of young people who’ve never seen it. It’s clean family fare.

Who’s the EP? If it looks slick and stylish, there’s every chance it could stick.

  9. I feel that starting The Project at 6pm as a lead out of Ten News would help Ten to retain some more of its audience watching at 5pm. Each night during Ten News there are promos plugging tonight’s The Project, which would probably appeal to some of the audience watching Ten News. But then I’m told to stick around until 6.30 while a Modern Family repeat plays. It just feels like a missed opportunity.

  10. I agree Family Feud is dated. I think Ten should make a local version of The Cube. It is fun and is very different to the other game shows. Put The Project at 6pm. It will build if starting the same time as news. And shift Neighbours to 7pm on 11 against H&A. Neighbours ratings are rubbish but at least it will eat into H&A demo and give a 7pm games how a fighting chance. Also think Ten should look at Take Me Out dating show as a Sunday lead in.

  11. @TasTVcameraman – The Project was moved to 6.00pm in 2012 and flopped against the news. So will Family Feud. They never learn

Neighbours on Ten @ 6.00pm would also be a terrible move. 6.30pm is where it should stay but move the show back to Ten and reinstate The 7pm Project.

  12. Family Fued was a great gameshow. So what if it’s been on before. Pretty much every gameshow has been around for decades. Look at the US and the continued success of programs like Wheel of Fortune, Lets Make A Deal, and Jeopardy.

Don’t like Grant as a host though

  13. @ David Knox

Sorry David, but the white flag you suggest is no longer ‘white’, sadly that flag is now completely stained red.

Seems it has it has been used for sometime now mopping up the blood from the news room and work room floors.

The shame is that there has never been enough blood spilled in the executive suite and the boardroom floors, and if there is ever the much overdue and deserved blood spilled in those rooms, the now blood red flag, would most likely be a stained light orange colour instead.

  14. Maybe ten could have developed a new show prior, “search for our next game show host”, and find someone brand new that the public have chosen.

  15. I don’t dislike Grant, he seems a really nice guy, but he is just too channel 7, ten needed to find their own host. I personally would have liked to have seen Fitzy, Adam Richard, Chrissie Swan, Tommy Little, Kate Lambrook or maybe Dave Thornton (I know that’s almost a whos who of Melbourne radio). I think they would all bring some humour to the show
