TEN goes back to the future with Family Feud reboot

TEN turns to a recycled format and host in a move that reeks of a lack of imagination.

2014-06-01_0039TEN has confirmed its 6pm entertainment show will be a revival of Family Feud.

The revival from FremantleMedia had been rumoured as late as last year but News Corp reports TEN has signed Grant Denyer as its host.

Both are a surprising move as the network seeks to shore up its numbers against Seven and Nine news bulletins.

Family Feud has a long history on Australian television dating back to 1977, but aside from new hosts and sets has arguably remained an old-fashioned format.

Grant Denyer, who quit Million Dollar Minute citing its “gruelling” schedule is also on record as saying he never “ever wanted to be a game show host.”

Today he tells News Corp “But in my defence, I don’t see this show in the same frame as the usual game show. It’s less formal.”

If Family Feud isn’t a decidedly usual game show, I don’t know what is, Grant.

Even The Rich List managed to take the same concept of audience-survey lists and find a more contemporary way of packaging it. And that was seven years ago.

Denyer, who was last in the news over allegations of drug rehabilitation, says he is pursuing legal action against Woman’s Day magazine, and sees the new show as a “fresh start.”

But this news reeks of a lack of imagination. If this is the best TEN’s brains trust can come up with for 6:00 then it’s probably time to hoist the white flag.

Or Homer Simpson.

  1. @ JdLdn Are we the only sane peeps out there who think Neighbours should be on at 7:00pm? I’d love it to be back on the main network as well, but little steps. When will Ten learn that The Project doesn’t work as an hour-long show? Nobody wants to commit to a full hour of it, simple as that. It should (only) be up against last half hour of news on the other networks and they should have their main local news back on at 6:00pm; the First at Five thing is long dead! Put your Family Feud on at 5:30pm and have a half-hour “National” news at 5:00.

    Sorted!

  2. Why the hell are people jumping from Seven & Nine to Channel Ten?

Matt White, that girl on Studio 10, the news lady from wake up, Mike Munro and now Grant Denyer

  3. Seems very strange after Grant rubbished game shows and said he never wanted to work in tv again.
He must need the money but it won’t be long before he leaves saying he wants more time with his family!

  4. GD is there for the V8s and this show is a filler (1% chance of a hit) and profile builder for the money it will cost Ten. He needs something and Ten want blood ex stone.

Just like SC Austereo, Ten is a carpet walkers haven.

  5. Why do people continually suggest news programming on channel Ten at 6pm?

Every attempt that has been made by Ten to break into the 6pm news war over the past 25 year has been a major failure, and any future attempt by Channel Ten to break into the 6pm news war will be a failure. News, Negus and The Project have all failed there. The general public do not want Ten News at 6pm. They want Ten News at 5pm. Yes, people do want news at 6pm, buth they want it from Seven or Nine. 6pm news is the property of Seven and Nine. And moving the 5pm bulletin would be one of the dumbest programming moves in the history of channel Ten, and considering some of there recent decisions, that is saying something. If Ten moved their news to 6pm, it will rate a distant third in that timeslot, and be massacred by Seven and Nine. Ten News at 5 is doing well right now. It wins its timeslot and was often the…

  6. Could they have picked a worse possible host? Maybe that guy from NZ who hosted the breakfast show on ten last year.

What they need is to just import the Steve Harvey version or even better, get Kenan Thompson doing Steve Harvey to host it. That would be worth tuning in for.

    Seriously. Grant Denyer????

  7. Could have watched this with a different host.
No disrespect to Grant, but feel a more likeable genuine. Also a more original host not left over (or rejected) from another network…

  8. Should do well.Do take into account Ten hasn’t had a Game Show at that time of Night since the Battle of the Sexes Era in the late nineties.Although a proven formula.Anything has to be an improvement over Homer Simpson,George Negus and Modern Family.

  9. @gaz – brilliant suggestion re Whose Line, something like that at 6pm could work as a local version.

For those suggesting other Ten “stars” to host – just remember how Carrie worked out as SYTYCD host and how we’ll recieved that was

Also remember how poorly Tommy Little and league of their own went, as well as how poorly This Week Live went

  10. I did not realise that “The Project” had been tried at 6.00 pm. Thanks to all who pointed that out to me.

I stopped watching the Project after it stopped being after Neighbours.

I wonder if TEN reran their News lead at 6.oo like CBS do in the states, Early afternoon news then Afternoon News, then early evening News, then Evening News, then Early Night News then they take a break for normal programming and then it starts again with Late Night news etc.
Moving Neighbours at 7.00 would not work as the less interesting Home & Away has that audience. Maybe because of the easier to get into nature of the show.

  11. How much of an audience is really out there for a non-news product at 6pm?

6pm in Australia is either news time or dinner time (or both!) for a lot of households. No-one’s going to give up watching the news for light entertainment, and a lot of families try to turn the TV off around dinner time. So is there really any way for Ten to be competitive with Seven/Nine news ratings in this timeslot unless it bites the bullet and itself goes with news at 6, to steal some of their market?

  12. Grant would have to be making much less money than at Seven, so what’s in it for him – why not stay at 7? Perhaps he knows it wil flop, and he’s signed on for a year, so easy money.

I’ll only watch if Grant has Rob Brough’s 80’s perm.

  13. This is obviously going to flop. Everyone knows it, except those working at Ten.

Putting The Project at 6pm on Ten is even worse. It already failed there in 2012, plus the 5pm news lead-in is worthless, since the majority of its viewers switch to Seven and Nine News at 6pm, and will continue to do so regardless of what Ten place at 6pm. I have said this before, and I will say it again: People do not want news programming on Ten at 6pm when they have Seven and Nine News. The Project 6:30 is currently failing against the news, and a 6pm portion would rate even worse.

I would get Neighbours back on the main channel, so that it is not cannibalising The Project, and there is long term potential for growth. But in the 6:30 slot, with The Project returning to 7pm. The Project can build an audience there without the news competition. A move to 6pm on Ten would kill Neighbours.

  14. If this one goes belly up, we should expect to see Hamish Maclennan’s resignation …. he’s responsible for this year’s disasters ………

  15. Once again Ten have stuffed up and just further proof why they’re in disarray. They never learn.
When Paul Henry was announced as host of Breakfast, the everyone said it was a bad call, we all said we wouldn’t watch because of this decision, and that the show will now flop. Well it did flop because people didn’t watch. When James Mathison and Tash Exelby were announced as hosts of Wake Up people said the same. Exelby lasted weeks, and the show was axed.
Now they go with Grant Denyer who has burnt every show he’s been on, and if you read this site at all you know he isn’t well liked. This will flop and will get the axe, unless Grant quits before they can axe it.

I no longer have any sympathy for Ten because they bring it on themselves with continuous bad decision making. I have even stopped watching Offspring because Ten decided to be like the other networks and start it 10-15…

  16. Just when will this network learn?

It just seems to lurch from one disaster to another with no idea what it’s doing.

What on earth will they pull out of the hat when this fails miserably?
