Offspring fans in turmoil after finale

"This seems like a forever ending," gasp devastated fans of Offspring.

2014-08-07_0017Devastated Offspring fans are united in despair today that last night’s finale was “clearly the last episode,” despite TEN and Producers confirming they are in discussion for more of the hit drama.

The finality of the episode, which finished with a family photo on baby Zoe’s birthday, included loving close-ups of all the central characters and a fond glimpse of Patrick’s ghost by Nina Proudman.

Storylines for Nina, Billie, family and friends were all satisfactorily resolved.

“Yes, Zoe, this is your family. And it’s always going to be like this,” Nina conceded.

It was enough to tip fans over the edge on social media.

Even tweets from creator Debra Oswald had a ring of finality:

  1. I’m torn. I love Offspring and even though I would love to see one more season I’m not sure the writers could top last nights season finale. Perhaps ending on a high is best?

  2. Maybe a telemovie finale would be a good compromise? I want to see more of them but I’m not entirely convinced there’s enough material there to make a season 6 that would be as satisfying and uplifting as season 5.

  3. As usual great episode last night, would like to see it back next year. I do ask if in fact it was the “finale” what exactly are Ten going to replace it with? More Wonderland?

  4. I can see this working as a series final but I really hope it’s back, given what they said on The Panel last night the actors are set to return, lets hope TEN sees the value in another season of the show.

  5. One of my favourite things about Offspring was that they weren’t particularly good looking people in a television sense (see Wonderland). These people are actors and damn fine ones too.

Thanks Offspring, it was a great ride.

  6. You couldn’t give me enough money to watch The Bachelor but the late start enabled me to watch Sabour on ABC1; at least most of it. So thanks to 10 for that.

  7. I agree. There were no cliffhangers to carry into a new season, everything was wrapped up tighter than a drum and they all lived happily ever after. I would be very surprised if it returned after such an obvious :”final” episode.

  8. What Randwick said.

If Mrs Prawn and I wanted to see two overly made-up, perma-tanned women in towering heels exchanging insults then I’m pretty sure there are specialist websites out there that can provide just that.

It was unlikely to get many into the right frame of mind for the final Offspring.

  9. I think I would prefer they left the series there. It was a great, rewarding ending. Happy tears instead of sad ones. I don’t want them to shake all the pieces up again and leave all the characters miserable again haha.

  10. What a pity that Offspring was preceded by what has to be the worst reality program that ten has to offer … The Bachelor ….. I sat down at 830 and had to endure this crap …..girls in a bitchfest arguing with each other … how does girls fighting and swearing at each other make national entertainment?

  11. I would have thought the tax exemption was in place so that shows could “get a leg up” so to speak by reducing production costs.

As a show gets more popular then the network showing it would be able to charge higher for advertising, thus increasing their return. When a show is a popular as Offspring then I think advertisers would be paying top dollar for their spots and this extra income more more than cover the lost tax exemption.

  12. Offspring has been an amazing drama and last night was a very satisfying conclusion. Sounds like the writers and producers have moved on to other projects, so even though Ten want more, it may not happen.

  13. I really enjoyed this season. I think it reached a peak. Felt previous seasons were struggling for story and becoming repetitive. Maybe seeing the finish line gave S5 an impetus it needed. As much as l will miss it, think it’s time to let it go.

  14. I wish they would tell us one way or the other if that was the end. It was an amazing ep last night but I could see that it could still go on, we could have stories of Zara being a dr, Nina & Leo going out, Martin, Cherie, Darcy and Kim antics…. It can still go on. It’s just not fair to leave us hanging. I want more. I would give them money to make more – it worked for that Veronica mars movie.
I haven’t said goodbye cos I don’t know if it is a goodbye yet.

  15. It’s finishing up because of the fact that there is a tax excemption that it has exhausted if it were to continue and the Ten Network weren’t wanting to foot the cost going foward. The federal government should be doing everything in their power to keep popular tv shows on air by keeping the tax arrangments the same as between 1 and 65 episodes.

  16. Yup, felt final to me. Beautifully done Kat Stewart with Asher Keddie; an unforgettable screen pairing. Chemistry ++++. That said, those writers are amazing, and just as they created it all, they can conjure up some more tangled plots for the Proudmans.

  17. All the very best tv series have ended leaving the fans wanting more…….that is always the best time to end rather than drag out a contrived continuation that just disappoints……however what about crowdsourcing some sizeable funds for a one off cinema release movie?
