A-League rise on FOX Sports

Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers setting a 10 year season-record audience for FOX Sports.

2014-10-20_1103FOX Sports is buoyed by numbers for its A-League coverage after declaring Saturday night’s match between Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers setting a 10 year season-record average audience of 188,000 viewers.

Friday night’s game on SBS ONE also scored 175,000.

FOX Sports CEO, Patrick Delany, said yesterday: “Last night was another shining example of the Hyundai A-League’s remarkable rise. It was incredible theatre, one of the most exciting sporting contests of the year and deserving of the record match attendance and television audience.

“The Sydney derby is becoming a must-watch event and I believe we are witnessing the birth of a great modern-day sporting rivalry,” he said.

“We’ve got record numbers watching the A-League, and with Foxtel’s new low pricing we are bound to see record numbers of football fans jumping on board to not only watch their A-League team but English Premier League, La Liga, and the Asian Cup as well as we move towards 2015.”

The first instalment of the Sydney derby for season 2014/15 will go down as one of the most memorable football matches ever played in Sydney, after the home side Sydney FC rallied with three unanswered goals, after conceding two goals in the opening 25 minutes to the Western Sydney Wanderers, to claim a gripping 3-2 victory in front of a record Allianz Stadium crowd of 41,213.

The Round 2 match, which was sealed on a 79th minute strike by Sydney FC star Alex Brosque, was watched by a new regular season-record average audience of 188,000 fans on FOX Sports 1HD & FOX Sports 1.

The match succeeds the Round 2 clash between Sydney FC and Newcastle in the 2012/13 season, which featured Alessandro Del Piero’s stunning free-kick against Emile Heskey’s Jets, which had an average audience of 164,000 viewers.

  1. Its very good ratings for Foxsports but compared with other sports they are not outstanding. Also judging by SBS ratings of 175,000 on Friday night, the sport still has a long way to go.

  2. Would like to watch more matches but as there is only one game on free to air than my viewing is quite limited. I think the a league did themselves a disservice with limiting the free to air coverage. In comparison the big bash league cricket has become more popular because ten now have the free to air rights.
