Big Brother not getting The Block’s timeslot

Ratings for Big Brother will see it stay put in its timeslot for much of the week, when The Block ends.

Shot2_012-final1_RTCHWhen The Block finishes on Sunday October 12th, it was always presumed Big Brother would land its timeslot.

Not necessarily.

TV Tonight understands it will remain in an 8:30 timeslot for most of its week, with the Eviction show moving to 7:30pm (NB: tix for Oct 14 are 5:45pm at Dreamworld).

Most other nights it will be preceded by comedies or factuals.

It’s a big surprise for such a flagship show.

It’s true to say that ratings for Big Brother have not repeated earlier success, but that doesn’t mean the show is necessarily a flop. By contrast, the amount of output generated by the cost is good value for money. It also continues to score well in the lucrative, younger demos.

BB has rarely been out of the Top 5 programs of the night with People 16-39 and has been the No. 2 program with People 18-49 on multiple nights. Timeshifted numbers have averaged 96,000 viewers.

But it also does not net the same broad audience as The Block, nor hold its lead-in numbers in Total People. That has left Nine in the position of weighing up whether the current season could deliver in the 7:30 slot.

It would also be mindful it has now established the later timeslot for the current season with the audience.

That said, so many timeslot changes -7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 8:40, 9:00 across various nights this season- makes it tough on the viewers too.

  1. How many more people will watch the last weeks just because it on at 7:30pm instead of 8:30pm (there will be some increase towards the end at 8:30pm?

And it probably means PG rated episodes of S8 of TBBT will be in there somewhere.

  2. I hope it gets renewed gets next year but put it back to 730pm and not make it air on Go! parts of the week, bloody stick to one channel and time otherwise Ten needs to get it back. I didnt think the ratings were that bad for the timeslot and to still top the demos but I think the cast this year has alot to do with the lower ratings.

  3. Seriously terrible scheduling. 7:30,8:30,9:30,9:46. Mostly on Nine, sometimes on Go, sometimes not in your state. The Nine website is such an abomination that it’s easier to catch up via other sources. It doesn’t help that producers keep playing with these characters without developing them. Also the timeline is hard to follow – who knows what day it is! Evicted people appear in background shots and you realise motivations in one scene can’t apply to another. It shouldn’t be this hard to watch a show!

  4. Part of the problem is the timeslot. I doubt many Ch 9 viewers are prepared to commit to two reality shows at once, and those only watching BB are likely put off by the inconsistent timeslot.

The other part of the problem is the content, and I hope Nine use the 8.30 slot as an opportunity to shift to more serious content and an M rating. Wishful thinking though.

  5. Bad idea, I think. So many people are complaining that’s it on too late this year. 8pm is the latest Big Brother should start.

They should at least trial the earlier time slot and see if the ratings improve at all, which I think they would.

  6. I don’t think keeping it post 8:30pm is a bad thing, but they should use that as an opportunity for less censored conversations and themes.

BB is never really going to attract the 55+ age bracket anyway, so just focus on keeping the 16-39 and 18-49 shares up and leave the 55+ group to the 7Two British stuff from the 90s.
