Reigan out as X Factor settles on final 3

Did X Factor judges save the best act or vote out the singer they view as the biggest threat?

2014-10-13_2156Brothers 3, Dean Ray and Marlisa Punzalan will compete in The X Factor grand final, following the elimination of Reigan Derry last night.

Derry, whose performances have wowed the judges every week, was saved by votes from her mentor RedFoo and Natalie Bassingthwaighte but Dannii Minogue and Ronan Keating voted for Marlisa.

But did judges save the best act or vote out the singer they view as the biggest threat?

The show’s format decrees they are protective of their own, which differs from other talent shows such as Australian Idol.

Last night’s show also included Ronan Keating’s Boyzone (now a misnomer for the ageing boyband?) performing Motown songs, but with none of the pizzazz of our own Human Nature. Local lads 5 Seconds of Summer also performed Amnesia and Good Girls, while The Script performed Superheroes.

The Grand Final is set to include live performances by Olly Murs, Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian, plus Taylor Swift on Monday.

8pm Sunday on Seven.

  1. Reigan was very lucky to be given the opportunity to appear on X Factor given that she has already had a couple of bites of the recording industry apple. It’s up to her to use the exposure she has enjoyed from the show and get a career going. I really don’t want see her next year on “The Voice”.

  2. I am glad Reigan is out as she appeared on the show as a professional act a few years ago with Scarlette Belle. I don’t think Xfactor should be doing this. Dean Ray is the stand out and should easily win.

  3. dannii is really annoying me.

she is definitely the only judge that votes strategically. she voted for taylor henderson when he was in the bottom two last year, when he was clearly superior singer.

she has done again this year, voting for reigan when she was in the bottom two and was the better singer twice.

brothers 3 i feel will win. not my cup of tea but they seem super popular.

do people think itunes sales should count for votes. sometimes a contestant could do well on itunes but be in the bottom two.

  4. Quite obviously the decision had already been made. The judges know who received the lowest votes before they start the show.
It has been interesting to note in which order the judges are asked to vote. It is not hard to see that it is all pre-planned.
Danni already knew that Reigan had the lowest number of votes so it was easy for her to vote for Marlissa and take it to the viewers votes…….don’t blame me…….the viewers voted her out.

  5. The show over the last few years has impressed me due to the fact that unlike other reality tv shows The X Factor actually produces successful winners.

In order for the show to carry on and remain successful it needs the right people in the final.

Samantha Jade, Dami Im, Reece Mastin have all proven that they were deserving winners/finalists.

To not have Reigan in the final 3 I believe has damaged the shows credibility and Danni is to blame for that as she could have put through the most consistent and without doubt the most versatile and ‘ready’ contestant.

If her and Dean were the final 2 now that would have been great TV and as a viewer I would’ve been happy either way as both acts are extremely talented.

The iTunes Charts say it all with Reigan and Dean proving that there music will actually be purchased.

Danni made a strategic and spiteful move last night which will not…

  6. Reigan definitely should have made it in over Marlisa IMO – I’m hoping for Dean to win over the others. Have liked him since the first audition.

There’s not all that much controversy here – I expected reigan to get the boot this week as she was bottom 2 a few weeks back and Brothers 3 and Dean were the two most popular acts in the public vote the week they revealed the voting order.

I expect Brothers 3 will win with Dean runner-up. First time since 2005 that a group will win the X Factor Australia

  7. The general consensus on twitter and forums such as this is that Brothers 3 should have been sent home weeks ago yet they keep getting through. Have their parents sold their house to pay the phone bill yet?

  8. I’m going to say this once and once only…If you wanted Reigan to be in the final 3 then you should have voted or voted more for her.

Don’t blame anyone but yourselves for not getting her to the final 3. The judges have a job to do and they need to pick one act to stay.

Don’t you dare think for one minute you know exactly what Dannii is thinking. She may have had a few issues with Reigan in the past but on the night she voted for the singer she thought was best.

If you’re upset Brothers 3 are in the final 3 then get over it!! The public love them, never put them in the bottom 2 and they deserve to get through. Maybe next time you’ll actually pick up the phone and vote rather than sitting back and then seeing your fav act go, come online and spew hatred and disgust at the result.

Marlisa deserves a top 3 place just as much as Reigan did.

    1. ItalianGuy1987: I’m not seeing much hatred or disgust being spewed here, certainly nothing that transgresses Comments Policy. Reality shows ask viewers to invest in a series and take sides, so audience reaction is par for the course whether it’s an X Factor elimination or a Block auction. Viewers are entitled to express a view with passion, just as you have. Whether any judge voted for the singer they thought was the best, or voted strategically to eliminate a threat is something only they know. But the format decrees it is a question worth asking at this end of the contest.

  9. Its an absolute disgrace. I’m still in shock this morning. Dannii clearly has it out for Reigan from day 1 and she got her way last night. She could have saved her but instead she didn’t. Reigan did the performance of the series last night. Did that not count for anything? Clearly it didn’t.

I’m just so disappointed we have a boyband who can’t sing on tune in the final and an amazing person has gone home. Its just wrong. I want a whole new judging panel next season but keeping Foo.

  10. Completely agree John Jackson. That is the point of having the judges make the decision to save at this point in the competition. To say that Marlisa was better than Reigan is ridiculous. To keep the integrity of the show in place (integrity of a reality tv show – may just be an oxymoron there…), Danni should have voted for Reigan – but of course she wouldn’t, because she is a big threat – how bad do Brothers Three look in comparison to Reigan each and every week. Really disappointing result. I don’t like any of the final three and I don’t care who wins now. Red Foo had the group that had the best singers, hands down – I had said from the first live performance show that he would be the winning judge this year – and he should be.

  11. This season’s “The X Factor: Australia” has been very attention-grabbing. The way it played out is so far removed from how I initially envisioned. I honestly assumed Reigan, Jason, and Tee would make it to the end. I absolutely love Dean so I’m not surprised to see him in the final. I also have a tremendous amount of respect for Marlisa and she has grown the most.

I’m saddened by Reigan’s elimination but like countless others I am confident she will have a career, one with longevity.

“dragging out the show into a nearly 90 minute marathon”.

Clearly you haven’t watched the show before. I loved every minute of it. If the show continued to be broadcast to midnight, I’d have no problem with it.

  12. I expected the bottom two to be Reigan & Dean, based in previous experience in the bottom two recently. But I honestly didjt expect Reigan to go. As many have said, the most consistent, exciting and passionate performer perhaps ever in the show. Marlissas voice on the top notes is piercing and her eleuqution leaves much to be desired. Reigan will hopefully get a record deal out of this.

  13. We all have our own favorite, and different singers appeal to different people, so who can say is the best, although Reigan has a strong voice, each week all I seemed to see was the production number itself and could not concentrate on the singing, too many other things happening stage to catch the eye, think at the moment need to be concentrate on the singer not on other things until she has established herself, but I am sure she will be a success, and out of the three remaining there will only be one winner so even if she made the final and it doesn’t mean she would have won.

  14. @craigj – The judges didn’t need to be deadlocked though. They have the power to prevent a shock upset and they have never gotten rid of a shock fave. Their power is great. If it was on Australian Idol, then all the hoopla and shock about Ricki Lee leaving never would have happened.

Even though Ronan loves Reigan it’s understandable he’d vote for his own category. Danni is another story though. She just screwed the shows reputation, by not choosing to save her. When your own category is not in the bottom you shouldn’t vote on strategy. Natalie is to be thanked by choosing to have Reigan stay, which was the best thing for the show.

  15. I really didn’t get last night. One thing I have loved about X Factor is having the judges there when the bottom two are revealed to prevent shock upsets.

When Ricki Lee left on Australian Idol if the judges had the power they would have saved her, yet they couldn’t do anything on that show.

Reigan was a major fave. Expected for the final, very high possibility of even winning. Judges saying her performances are the best they’ve seen on that stage, standing ovations and other things like she is a record companies dream, etc. So if she was in the bottom you’d expect the judges to save her.

Yet Danni says goodbye to her? Picking her over Marlisa. Marlisa may have some strengths but I feel she is too young and in no way has received the accolades Reigan did – so I’m really stumped and the X Factor is now poorer for Reigans departure.

  16. “But did judges save the best act or vote out the singer they view as the biggest threat?”

Exactly. Because there is no question, Reigan has been the best, most consistent, most talented contestant. I really doubt I’ll watch the final sing-off – I’ll watch the Grand Final but that’s because of the other artists that will be performing. Very disappointing result – that Brothers Three are in it I will never understand because they were dreadful. And have been dreadful. And Marlisa was ok last night, but not nearly as good as Reigan.

  17. I don’t normally get too worked up over these type of shows but it is an absolute embarrassment to the show that Reigan isn’t in the grand final. She has been far and away the best performer throughout the majority of the series. Poor little Marlissa is no where near emotionally mature enough to deal with actually winning this thing.

  18. Why was X Factor dragging out the show into a nearly 90 minute marathon. I turned off when Luke threw to a promo for Big Adventure during the show. I came back after TBBT to watch the result. What a drawn out affair with each judge taking 2-3 minutes even if we knew they would be saving their own artist.
No wonder numbers are way down this year.

  19. As a loyal viewer of the show I find it quite disappointing that Reigan is not in the Grand Final she has without a doubt been the strongest contestant of the series with absolute stellar performances that I looked forward to every week. The fact she is not in the Grand Final has made the show a little weaker, I’m sure she’ll do well no matter what but would’ve been great to have her there at the end.

  20. Maybe Ronan and his “boys” should consider changing their name to Boyzonce.

Looks like Brothers 3 are going to win this even though they are merely OK. Not the best singers by far or the best harmonisers. But it was great seeing how excited they were at getting through to the finals.

  21. Interestingly the last three years the third contestant to make it through to the Grand Final has been decided by the public vote due to the judges deadlock. Just a coincidence I guess.
