Sam dismisses Blake’s promises: “A load of rubbish!”

Things went wrong as soon as the cameras stopped rolling on The Bachelor.

blakegThe Bachelor Blake Garvey did not deny he was involved with someone else when quizzed by The Project‘s Carrie Bickmore.

In his first TV interview since confirming he was no longer engaged to Sam Frost, the Perth auctioneer tried to maintain he had proposed sincerely during filming. But deflecting the reasons for the bust-up, he told Bickmore he had said goodbye to a number of women on the show and that now “my heart is broken.”

But Sam Frost said things went wrong as soon as the cameras stopped rolling and the relationship never had a chance. Living in different cities back in Australia, communication was left to Skype.

“It’s not necessarily that something went wrong. It’s just a general feeling that something is not quite right,'” Blake Garvey told Bickmore.

“(Sam and I) met up in person and just talked over it as anyone would.

“When you have that time together and you feel it’s not quite right, you have to listen to your heart. It’s hard because I do love Sam and she’s a beautiful person”

But Sam Frost said the proposal in Africa was a shock.

“I was not expecting him to propose,” she said.

“Realistically I was like “Really you want to propose?’

“I’m quite confused to be honest. I thought at the time it felt quite natural and real. I feel a bit played.’

Frost said in the nights following the finale, she knew something was wrong.

“He was a bit emotional and a bit upset so I let him have his time and distance,” she said.

“We were more like friends. We actually haven’t even hung out as a couple or given it a shot. He just dusted off his hands and said ‘It’s done.’ I thought ‘What’s done? You haven’t even tried.’

“As soon as the cameras stopped rolling I feel like he just switched off.”

Garvey attempted to explain his actions to Bickmore, but struggled to answer some of the questions. He explained his actions as part of the Reality TV experience.

“I was there and I was in that moment. Maybe you get caught up in it all,” he shrugged.

“By all means I thought I was doing the right thing and the best thing at the time.”

When asked if he was involved with anybody else, he hesitated before saying, “It’s not about that right now. It’s about my heart is broken.”

But Frost, who keeps the $58,000 ring, was saddened then angered by the turn of events.

“I said ‘How dare you propose to me. How are you take that away from me,'” she said.

The sour ending to The Bachelor has damaged the show’s brand, and raises questions about why the proposal was included in the final edit if parties knew the romance was over. Despite 2013’s Tim and Anna still together as a couple, it hasn’t been the fairytale ending for Blake and Sam.

Frost said she watched the episodes in which he expressed his dreams of true love with disbelief.

“What a load of rubbish!” she said.

  1. I hardly think this outcome “damages the brand”. If that was the case then the US version wouldn’t be around for almost 20 seasons (where only a handful of the couples are still together)! If anything, it’s gotten people talking and has been good publicity for Ten. I actually love this show and it’s such a guilty pleasure of mine and this season from start to finish has certainly been a memorable one for me.

Meanwhile, this interview has done no favours for Blake. Him dodging some the questions seemed suss to me and when he did come up with some BS responses I sure as heck didn’t believe him! Sam, he’s done you a huge favour, girl.

  2. If she was having doubts as he proposed why did she say yes? Oh yes there was that $58,000 ring which she gets to keep after doing a deal with the jeweller.
Yes it1 was a game show & Sam got the ring & her 5 mins of fame by throwing it all back onto Blake.
Was Blake under pressjre to propose after last year’s couple seem to have stayed together?
Ten needs to make Sam the Bachelorette & she can feel the pressure of playing the field on camera.

  3. Of course this result muddies the brand. Yes, it’s nothing but a ridiculous reality show and there’s never a guarantee that the relationships last, but it’s also sold as a bit of romantic fantasy.. the strapping man looking for love.. primarily to female viewers. If effectively minutes after the fairytale ending, ‘Prince Charming’ turns out to be just another nasty player, that impacts on the fantasy and tarnishes the brand.

Could it have been avoided? Probably not. Will the fallout have caused serious brand damage? For a bit.. until the next handsomely strapping ‘Charming’ is revealed and all will be forgotten.

  4. #mistaken I am with you, Laurina was the one for him, she would show him who was boss !

As for damaging the brand….most people I know did not watch the show..but after the whole “Shock Proposal” ending most people wanted to know more. So I see it as a plus for TEN. As said here their only mistake was not saying anything about the break up. Even a super over the titles maybe would have been enough. Something along the lines of ” since the filming ended , Blake and Sam have called off the engagement”

  5. I agree – these claims that it has damaged the brand is a load of rubbish. Please stop pushing this line without any compelling argument for it. There really is none.

  6. Damaging to the brand? Please! The brand was a joke to begin with. This was fantastic for the show. It caused buzz and it continued the narrative after the show was finished. My Facebook newsfeed ate it up, they knew the whole thing was ridiculous and loved the faux drama of it all.
Ten did the right thing by showing the engagement. Imagine if they didn’t and it came out (which it would have) that they didn’t air it. Then people would actually be angry.
If there was any damage it was Ten not coming out with a statement quick enough, it was the softball interview by Bickmore and it was the stupid behaviour by Rove during the interview, he undermined the whole thing.

  7. Reality TV is constantly criticised for not being all that real. Good on ch10 for showing the proposal- it happened, Blake made that choice at the time and the only one that has questions to answer is the man himself.

  8. Seems Blake is the villain. Sam, Lisa and Louise all dodged a bullet.

Go have been promising for months the latest series of The Bachelor US which is over six months old as Coming Soon. Think they should cash in on the hype and start screening it Thursday’s before Survivor.

Lastly, interview on The Project was all a bit rushed, heavily edited as if we have not got the concentration for a normal paced interview. If that is all Blake had to do for contractual obligations, he got out of it very lightly.

  9. I don’t understand the claims of it damaging the show’s brand – surely no one over 16 takes it seriously?! It’s a bit of fun & that’s why Blake looks so bad – he turned something that is fun & frivolous into something nasty. But it’s not damaging The Bach’s brand at all, noone expects couples on reality shows to last. Blake damaged his own ‘brand’ & that is all, the show has had so much publicity & it hasn’t bern negative about 10, just Blake. I can’t wait for next year, the casting for the girls was spot on – BB should take note! – it was Blake who was miscast but by the end of the series all the talk was about the girls anyway – I’m sure 10 don’t care what the focus is as long as the ratings are good!

  10. I’ve been asking. Now I know. She keeps the ring!
How many times did TEN rerun the final episode? Seems every time I surfed TEN or 11 over the weekend IT was on.
Is he back with the chick he was with before he went on the show?

  11. Blake was clearly in the show for reasons which haven’t yet been confirmed, but clearly aren’t related to looking for love/a partner. But it could also be argued many of the women on the show are also on there to boost their public profile or advertise their businesses. It’s a light hearted, comedic reality show – I’m not sure how a show like this would appeal to someone like Sam, who seems genuine and down to earth.

  12. The proposal did happen and there were 1,206,000 reasons why they included it.

Ten’s mistake was not putting out a statement for the Friday morning news that they had split up after filming. It was not something they could keep quiet. As usual it is the attempted cover-up does the most damage.

  13. “…damaged the show’s brand…”? hardly. The whole mess created enormous interest in the show. If Ten were wise they would cash in by signing Sam up as the first Bachelorette and hold off on the third season of The Bachelor. People already know Sam’s down to Earth and genuine, whereas with another bachelor viewers will be second guessing him.

No one seriously thinks the show is about finding lve right? It’s pure trainwreck entertainment which Ten has done extremely well this season. Anything involving Blake was as boring as heck. The entertainment came from the girls. I just wish he would have picked Laurina who would have torn him to shreds.
