The Voice winner’s single struggles to fire

Another sign X Factor talent scores ahead of The X Factor winners.

2014-07-22_0933The ongoing debate about The Voice graduates vs. those from The X Factor looks set to continue with reports that Anja Nissen’s debut single I’m So Excited debuted at No. 42 on the ARIA chart with 3023 sales nationally.

Nissen, in case you had forgotten, is the talented singer who won the Nine talent show in July.

But original plans for her single, My Girls penned by Delta Goodrem, were abandoned in favour of a song by will.i.am -but it was accompanied by a three month delay.

Marlisa Punzalan, who won The X Factor, released her single on the night of the show’s Grand Final and it has been in the Top 5 for three weeks.

The Herald Sun notes the latest album by The Voice‘s inaugural winner Karise Eden has held in the Top 20 for a third week. 2013 champion Harrison Craig is yet to release his own original album, after two covers records.

None of the runners-up on this year’s season of The Voice have been signed by Universal.

In July Manager Michael Parisi said of Anja Nissen, “People will be blown away. The next stage of her career will be exciting, this is going to throw everything on its head.”

  1. I think it’s a combination of the way in which she won (random wildcard?), the huge delay, the quality of the song and the quality of the show.

The Voice eliminates contestants far too rapidly and we never really get to know (or care) about them. Fanbase is huge in music (almost regardless of quality) and she obviously doesn’t have a big one. That’s how she got the 5th highest votes in the semi-final and the most votes in the grand finale. The viewers barely get time to pick a favourite so the results are quite wishy-washy.

  2. X factor is far superior. The Voice to me seems to be more about big production, big personalities and big voices and less about creativity, uniqueness and a platform that can propel wannabes to long term success. Over the 3 seasons of the voice how many contestants have succeeded on the charts?
Look at X factor. Reece Mastin, Dami Im, Taylor Henderson and Marlisa just to name a few.

  3. No surprises here. Jackson was much better. I’m sure Anja will sing at Carols by Candlelight to help promote The Voice 2015 and maybe someone might buy her music too.

  4. Think the X factor is far, far, superior to The voice, at least with the X factor it is the performers that are given the limelight, which it should be, and not the judges that they have on The voice hogging the limelight, look at me aren’t I good, they have already made in the music world so shouldn’t take everything away from the contestants they are the ones that need it.

  5. Such an awful song with horrendous lyrics – surely Deltas song would been better than that. I really don’t understand why they waited three months to release a single. Why couldn’t they release the song written by Delta on the finale, put it on her covers album, then release ‘I’m So Excited’ once it was ready for her actual debut album…

  6. Considering that they signed the top 4 last year but all their releases did so poorly, that comes at no surprise that no one but the winner was signed by UMA.

The delayed single was also a poor decision.

  7. Maybe it is the duqbious way she won or the will.i.am influence or the fact that her voice is auto tuned or that the song is dreadful….or all of the above. I predicted she would be another bland pop singer.
Marlisa on the other hand has harnessed the Filipino community to help her career, maybe that is why she is doing so well. (A wise move as she will undoubtedly do well in S.E. Asia).

  8. Anja is having more luck spruiking her big w clothes line, it seems..

Marlisa’s success could also be attributed to the song itself, it’s much better than Anja’s debut..

  9. Sounds like she has made some terrible decisions, and I get the feeling it was will.i.am advising her.

The song is absolutely dreadful, how bad could her original single have been that she sacrificed so much to go down this route.

  10. Geez, I knew she wouldn’t have sold a hell of a lot of copies given the song debuted at No. 42 but I didn’t think it would be as low as 3023. Not surprised considering the song is absolutely terrible.
