New gang drama in development

Screentime is in early development on a new drama being likened to an "Australian Sons of Anarchy.'

2014-12-29_0037Screentime is developing a new drama project with John Ibrahim, previously the central character of Underbelly: The Golden Mile.

Likened to an “Australian Sons of Anarchy‘ the project is fiction but inspired by actual events. Ibrahim serves as a consultant on the project.

News Corp reports it is loosely based on Ibrahim and his three brothers Sam, Michael and Fadi, and will begin with the infamous shooting of his younger brother Fadi in 2009.

Producer Des Monaghan, recently honoured at the Screen Producers’ Awards, said “If and when something might happen, it’s too soon to say at this point.

“John and I have had some conversations and we’re still talking about some ideas,” he said. “But there’s no clear model.”

Screentime previously produced both Underbelly and Brothers in Arms.

  1. Suspect Wild Boys was never actually touted as grittier than Deadwood, given it was a family skewed show in an early evening timeslot. But there may have been reference to the rise in period westerns, which is a fair observation.

  2. As soon as they said the words a Australian Sons of Anarchy. I shook my head. I have no confidence that this will be good. I do remember an Aussie show called Wild Boys a few years back and it was touted as being grittier than Deadwood, far from it Not even close.

  3. This looks an extremely dicey, lame and derivative proposition, and given Screentime’s track record lately I can see this easily being cancelled/awful and/or DOA.

  4. I am somewhat stunned that the concept of an “Australian Sons of Anarchy” could be contemplated, especially if it is modeled in any way on the Ibrihim clan. The SOA members are brothers because they choose to be brothers. The Ibrahim brothers are such by an accident/providence of birth.

Give it a miss Screentime, you have no clue.

  5. It would be a Christmas miracle if the people who made Brothers in Arms were to actually make something “like an Australian Sons of Anarchy”.

The irony is that the one that is based on a real event is less believable than the fiction. SoA is a solidly written, thoroughly well-crafted adult drama. Brothers in Arms is a cartoon.

If ever I see another slo-mo montage of violence overlain with musical counterpoint I think I’ll scream.
