ABC viewers will finally get to see the AFC Asian Cup Live around the country this week when the Socceroos’ compete against China in a Quarter Final match.
This will air Live from 9.00pm AEDT Thursday 22nd January (on ABC2 in WA). Stephanie Brantz will be joined by former Socceroos Brett Emerton and Paul Okon, as well as ABC’s Gerard Whateley, with live crosses from the field by Francis Leach.
While it sounds like a response to viewer complaints about delays, ABC had always promised Socceroos finals would be seen Live.
Australia will proceed to the Semi Final on January 27 if it wins against China.
Justin Holdforth, Head of ABC Sport and Events, said: “Australia’s response to the AFC Asian Cup so far has been phenomenal. It would be great to see the support for this historic tournament lift even further now we’re in the knock out phase. With the Socceroos’ matches now live on ABC TV, we hope that everyone in Australia who is unable to get to the match in Brisbane, will be sitting down to watch this Quarter Final live, and cheering the Socceroos on.”

i am guessing it has something to do with Fox Sports have the live rights to it..
and here is the schedule to it
abc.net.au/news/asian-cup-2015/broadcast-schedule/
@tvf The kick-off times need to be as late as possible so the rest of Asia get the games closer to prime-time.
For once the east coast of Australia isn’t the primary concern…
@DaveM – TV guides for the 26th and 27th, when the semis are on, are currently showing regular programming. So perhaps the deal actually is that those matches will be only live if Aus are in?
Thursday’s QF isn’t even listed for Per. I’m guessing that the ABC1 Comptroller didn’t submit the required paperwork in quadruplicate with 4 weeks notice for them to be able to use ABC2 to broadcast sport instead of repeats of Shaun the Sheep, Spicks and Specks, and That ’70s Show.
Thank goodness… Live in WA. Sick and tired of the delays around WA.
I’m wondering why the game itself is scheduled to start 8.30pm bris (9.30pm syd/melb time). Its quite late start time for a match considering its a weeknight. Surely something could’ve been done to start the game earlier.
@DaveM. Both semis and final are live on ABC regardless if Australia go through or not.
Hmm…so no other quarter finals live on ABC then? What if Australia get knocked out? Will that mean we won’t see the semis and the final live?
At the very least the final should be live no matter who is playing…I’d watch.
