Richie Benaud continues health recovery

Hopes for Richie Benaud to return and commentate cricket for Nine now appear unlikely.

2014-11-10_1442Hopes for Richie Benaud to return and commentate cricket for Nine this week now appear unlikely, with the 84 year old continuing to attend to his health, following skin cancer diagnosis.

Nine had left the door open for 84-year-old to return for the fourth Commonwealth Bank Test against India Tuesday in Sydney -or even commentate from his home- but Nine’s head of sport Steve Crawley confirmed that Benaud hadn’t been in touch.

“I very much doubt he’ll be calling over the next five days,” Crawley told AAP.

“But if he did decide to jump in a taxi and get over to the SCG, well, the door is always open to him.” Crawley said only Benaud would decide if and when he got behind the microphone again.

“With Rich we just want him to get better,” Crawley said. “All that matters is his health and recovery.”

In November the veteran was inducted into the SCG Media Hall of Honour.

  1. Its a shame, the more experienced commentators give the commentary colour. I didn’t reale this until I heard Bill during the last test. The newer blokes are really good but just not the same

  2. I very much doubt Ritchie will ever call again, except maybe a farewell test if his health will allow it. At 84, who can blame him? On another note In 2012 Bill Lawry announced he would retire in January the following year, he’s still going, maybe Nine talked him into going on.
