UK singer-songwriter Jackie Trent, who co-wrote the theme to Neighbours, has died aged 74.

She died in hospital in Spain on Saturday after a long illness, her spokesman said. She died less than a week after the 30th anniversary of the long-running soap.

With ex-husband Tony Hatch, Trent pen more than 400 songs, with Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson, Des O’Connor, Val Doonican, Vikki Carr, Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark and Dean Martin.

They separated in 1995 when Hatch declared his love for a mutual friend. They divorced in 2002.

In later life, Trent made a return to the stage, touring the UK in the musical High Society, and in 2004 played a series of concerts.

But a legal stoush emerged in 2013 when Trent felt overlooked when Hatch was to be inducted into the US Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

“It’s not about money,” she said. “This is about getting personal and professional credit for my work.”
