Ten more countries have qualified for the Eurovision Song Contest Final as a result of the First Semi Final taking place in Vienna earlier this morning (Australian time).
The lucky ten are Albania, Armenia, Belgium, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Russia and Serbia.
Missing out were Moldova, Finland, The Netherlands, Macedonia, Belarus, and recent winners Denmark. No 85 seconds of Punk this year.
It was great to hear the three hosts repeatedly reference “Europe -and Australia!” in their banter.
Vienna staged a spectacular show, opened by uber-elegant Conchita Wurst.
Guy Sebastian also made it on stage in a special acknowledgement of our inclusion (and a montage of former Aussie-born entrants).
Armenia – Genealogy with Face the Shadow
Belgium – Loic Nottet with Rhythm Inside
Greece – Maria-ElenaKyriakou with One Last Breath
Estonia – Elina Born & Stig Rasta with Goodbye to Yesterday
Serbia – Bojana Stamenov with Beauty Never Lies
Hungary – Boggie with Wars For Nothing
Russia – Polina Gagarina with A Million Voices
Albania – Elhaida Dani with I’m Alive
Romania – Voltaj with All Over Again
Georgia – Nina Sublatti with Warrior
The second Semi Final takes place 5am AEST on Friday on SBS ONE.

I completely underestimated how much more frustrating Eurovision is when your votes actually count! I voted for Denmark 8 times and was really annoyed when they didn’t go through.
Russia is definitely my favourite from the first semi-final. A real standout. Can’t wait for semi-final 2 then the big grand final!!
Not a fan of punk music but sorry that Finland didn’t make it. They got a huge response in the arena.
Shame also about Netherlands, but congrats to the 10 that did make it through.
Ironically, voting was not open in Austria because they weren’t competing… But Australia could still vote!
The Finland entry did indeed have a compelling human interest back story … but let’s be brutally honest here … the song was rubbish. No surprise it didn’t make it through.
Way too early for this old duck….but I thank you David Knox for your work….and for putting up the video links..I am about to watch all….I Love Eurosvision!!
Hopefully Guy Sebastian won’t get beyond the semi-finals stage and we’ll be spared the embarrassment of being part of this sham, Eurovision.
Eh? He automatically qualifies for the Final, skipping the Semis.
So we won’t be spared the embarrassment of this drip on the biggest waste of air-time ever devised to chew up several hours of precious broadcasting time? Damn!
We batted at 50% in our household. We were thrilled to see ones we voted for get through (Yay Serbia, Russia, and Romania!) but devastated to see The Netherlands, FYR Macedonia, and Belarus go home. So excited to be part of the process though!
Yay, Greece!
I voted for her.
Bummed that Moldova missed out! I voted for them!! Like who doesnt love a mid performance strip?!?!?
None of the 3 songs I voted for got through 🙁 Lucky there are some great songs upcoming.
Was a great production. Looking forward to 5am Friday!
Really disappointed by the “quality” of the songs. Hope they improve for semi final 2, or it will be another waste of having to get up at 3am.
I really liked the Hungarian song. Glad that that Finland rubbish didn’t get through.
Shame about the catchy Danish one missing out.
Russia best in form from SF1. A real contender.
Agree David.
The Russian song was clearly the best of this group.
Yes me too. I voted Russia glad they got thru. I liked Hungary and Belarus as well but not all my picks got thru. Exiting to be able to vote
Hungary qualifying maybe the only real shock there. Hopefully Finland not getting through means that is the first and last punk song we ever see on a Eurovision stage.
“Good Morning Australia, Good Evening Europe”. Awww Austria
