Looking to hone your TV drama writing skills?

AFTRS Open has a range of short courses with writers from Winners and Losers, House Husbands, McLeod’s Daughters and Heartbreak High and producers that can help you develop projects from the flash of an idea through to a compelling script.

In July there are two introductory screenwriting courses: Winter School: Writing for TV Intensive with hugely experienced TV writer Sarah Walker (Winners & Losers, Wonderland) and our 10 week online course Writing for TV: Part 1 with award winning screenwriter and Script Producer Andy Watt (Life Begins, Wild at Heart, City Lights, House Husbands). Both courses help you take your great TV idea to the next level. You’ll learn the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama and comedy series concepts including working in a team environment.

Also in July Writing for TV: Part 2, From Concept to Script with Alexa Wyatt (Heartbreak High, Home and Away, McLeod’s Daughters ) guides more experienced writers on the journey from a developed concept through to the structuring of a first draft pilot. From logline to scene breakdown, you will learn strategies to get prepared for writing a first draft of a television series episode.

In August is Script Development for Producers with script “guru” Linda Aronson. In this weekend intensive you’ll learn how to turn a clever one line premise into a successful multiple-season TV series, plus get loads of tips about picking and fixing common script problems, coping with non-linear storytelling, ensuring rewriting is productive and discovering how you can be that invaluable “fresh set of eyes”.

Chris Phillips brings her 20 years’ experience as a screenwriter, script editor and script producer to Exploring Character, also in August. Great stories come from great characters and this two-day, hands-on workshop offers writers of screen, stage and literary fiction a powerful tool for developing original and dimensional characters using the Enneagram – a unique approach to understanding the psychology, emotions and behaviour of ourselves and others.

Also in August is Girls on Film: Creating Unforgettable Female Characters. If you’re frustrated by the limited vision of women you see in the cinema but not sure how to change it this inspiring, two day intensive workshop with Jessica Redenbach will equip you with the tools to take your idea or script to the next level.

Student feedback for the AFTRS Open screenwriting courses is outstanding:

“Really interesting perspective. Extremely inspiring, both course and teacher. I believe this will change my life. Literally!”
