I doubt even Julia Zemiro saw this one coming….
Eurovision is now officially a subject at Melbourne University, as part of a pop-tastic look at European culture.
Enrolled first year students will have a weekly 1.5 hour lecture and a 1 hr tutorial.
“This subject introduces students to Europe through the prism of its biggest annual media extravaganza, the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC),” the university’s handbook says.
“The ESC offers a rich site for exploring many issues at the core of Europe today: the expansion of the European Union, the integration of Europe as well as the nation branding of new participating states.”
Here’s what the course entails:
– Acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history and development of Europe through the prism of the Eurovision Song contest;
– Develop a critical appreciation of how issues such as the integration of Europe and the nation branding of states are reflected in the Eurovision Song Contest;
– Acquire the ability to communicate effectively about issues relating to the Eurovision Song Contest;
– Acquire critical thinking and analytical skills.
No wonder on frocking up or field trips, but maybe Julia, Sam or Guy could pop along for a guest lecture?

Defiantly weird, just like Eurovision its self.
You know what would be a fun little article for you David (if it’s a slow news day and you need to post something), real university courses based on TV programs.
Well I’m at the wrong university, almost went to Melbourne and I would have so loved this unit
