Protest outside ABC Melbourne office

Members of a far-right nationalist group protest in the latest fallout from Monday's Q & A episode.

Members of a far-right nationalist group protested outside the ABC’s Melbourne headquarters, in the latest fallout from Monday’s Q & A episode.

The anti-Islam group waved Australian flags and appeared to cook a pig on a spit, telling media the ABC was “not democratic. It’s not Australian”.

ABC journalist Loretta Florance tweeted ABC staff were told not to leave via the front door.

“Pretty sure there are more camera crews than actual protesters outside the ABC in Melbourne,” she noted.

On Friday media reported ABC had stepped up security at its Sydney headquarters following a number of threatening phone calls. Students normally given access to shortcut through their Ultimo foyer would no longer be permitted, while visitors would have to be escorted on the premises.

However TV Tonight can confirm that managing director Mark Scott had ordered security be stepped up in ABC offices several weeks ago, with guests being escorted on site. It moved up another level again on Friday.

An ABC spokesperson said, “Security has been stepped up at major ABC offices across Australia as a precautionary measure to protect the welfare of staff. There have been a number of threatening phone calls.”

  1. OMG! How can this be? You mean that in tolerant, diverse, all-embracing Australia, that even those on the right are entitled to express a point of view and protest? The country is going to the dogs.

  2. I started writing a response in defence of the ABC against such silly accusations but realised quickly there’s no real point arguing against such stupidity.

  3. Just off-camera to the left is the portable Australian Army recruitment kiosk and to the right some guys in dark suits, wearing dark glasses and talking into their top pockets. Meanwhile in China, the Aussie Flag Co. is hiring more staff.

  4. It was nice of them to provide free food. A pig on a spit is certainly one step up from a sausage sizzle……and they don’t appear to be encouraging anyone to go overseas and kill minority groups. Why didn’t the ABC invite them onto its weekend news 24 programs for a chat. They often allow extreme left wing commentators on. Its that lack of balance again….

    1. The United Patriots Front splitters.
      We’re The United Peoples Front.
Oh. I thought we were The United Popular Front.
      Patriots Front!
Whatever happened to the Popular Front?
      He’s over there.
      Splitter.

      1. Damn I got it worng…should be We’re The United Patriots Front…urgh (last time I try and use Month Pythion in a different way).

      1. I read about it in the Sydney Morning Herald – a Fairfax publication.
I did not actually view the program, as I haven’t watched Q&A for years, due to the obvious left bias. All I ask for from the news or current affairs programs is both sides of any story, but that has often been missing from the ABC in recent years.
And I don’t want to hear anything from a thug who wants female journalists to be raped for holding views counter to his. Call me a crazy feminist if you like, but that character is not welcome on my TV!
