Sunrise has apologised following a Facebook post that has been labelled as “victim blaming,” after it asked “What’s it going to take for women to get the message about taking and sending nude photos?”

The story surrounded nude photos of Adelaide women and girls that have been shared as revenge porn on a US website.

But after some viewers hit out at the show’s opinion, Sunrise deleted the post and issued an apology.

In a statement to Fairfax Media, Sunrise said, “We apologise unreservedly to anyone offended by a post that was made on the Sunrise Facebook page regarding nude photos and online security yesterday, and in particular to the victims. Whilst it was not our intention we appreciate that the wording of the post was insensitive. The post has been removed.”

In the segment on Wednesday morning, David Koch defended the victims, calling the nude photo leak “terrible” and “identity theft of the worst kind”.

  1. Looks like they tried a crack at serious news and failed. Look no problem guys – just leave that to ABC breakfast, they know how to do this “news” stuff well enough.
Best to get back into the business of playing with cockroaches – surely nothing controversial will happen then?

  2. “Victim Blaming”, a slogan all too often used by those who refuse to take responsibility for their own shortcomings, failings and stupidity.

  3. The only wrong thing about this whole episode is that Sunrise were bullied into apologising over it by the PC police. People need to be aware that their actions can have consequences such as this, and whilst it is not entirely their fault that their private information is misused, they do need to think twice before sharing such sensitive photos.

  4. I feel really sorry for these girls and women but sharing a naked photo with your boyfriend is not smart. Yes, you should be able to do it but a phone can get stolen or a boyfriend may not be trustworthy. This is not victim blaming but victim educating. A bit like not walking home alone in a bad street. Once again you should be able to do it but we don’t live in a perfect world. I think Sunrise is correct to educate (not blame) people about not doing nude selfies.

  5. I don’t fully agree that this is victim blaming. Private photos are private 100 per cent. Once they become shared in this digital age, they can move rapidly and privacy laws are hard to enforce. All you can do is advise and educate folk, m or f, about doing everything they can to protect their privacy and the potential consequences outside of their control, if they don’t. At least then people can make an informed decision.
