“Dessert King” Reynold eliminated from MasterChef -but TEN spoils the outcome

Praised as the best pastry chef the show had ever seen, last night the luck ran out for 21 year old Reynold Poernomo.

He was hailed as the “Dessert King” and the best pastry cook the show had ever seen, but last night Reynold Poernomo was sent packing from MasterChef in the biggest shock so far this season.

He failed to match fellow contestants Billie and Jessica in recreating a dish by Brett Graham, the highest ranked Aussie chef in the world. Despite his remarkable talent at just 21 years of age, savoury dishes were never his strongest point.

But the judges praised his 27 dessert dishes he had served up over the course of the season, assuring him of an assured career in the industry.

In an emotional farewell, Reynold told them the contest had been a personal highlight.

But in a stunning blunder, TEN managed to spoil the outcome through social media, when it promoted a MasterClass with the three remaining females.

It took 15 minutes before it could reverse the mistake -but by then fans had unleashed their anger at the outcome being spoiled.

With the last male eliminated from the contest, Billie arguably firms as the one to beat, going head to head with Jessica and Georgia in the semi final.

On Monday the last two standing will compete for the series title, as TEN’s series chalks up its biggest numbers this season.

  1. This was not the first time Ten’s promos spoilt the show. It has happened a few times before – so whoever committed the ‘error’ should be reprimanded.

As for Reynold going – well I guessed it as soon as Georgia said his cucumber wedges weren’t the same size as the original dish.

    So I turned off.

And Georgia has been the favourite to win for a very long time. Billie is the last cook who could beat her in the finale – and it wouldn’t surprise me if she got eliminated on Sunday.

And yes – if you have time visit the MCA FB page and see how many people have expressed disappointment with the alleged bias the judges have shown Georgia throughout the series.

IMO – this bias is what ruined the whole series for me.

  2. Strange to read some thought the judges favoured Geogia. I was irked at how much they seemed to favour Reynold, George especially. He repeatedly spoke to him, praised him, encouraged him and talked up his cooking, even when he failed to produce all the elements. Twice in recent crucial pressure tests he tried to cast doubt in Billie’s mind on her choices, while openly encouraging Reynold not to give up. In one test, when they all decided to cook desserts all the judges try to discourage them by trumpeting Reynolds ability, awarding him almost Blumenthal status. I applauded Georgia for replying to a judge’s query “can’t you see what Reynold’s cooking?” with, “I’m not looking at what Reynold’s cooking, I’m cooking my own” or words to that effect. George and co. would have sacrificed one of the women for Reynold in his elimination test but for the guest Judge who was clearly…

  3. Reynold reminded me in a way of Jimmy a few years ago. Reynold cooked desserts mainly all the time and Jimmy basically cooked curries. Yes of course you play to your strengths, but Billie, Georgia and to an extent Jessica can cook both really well.

I couldnt believe it when Reynold flipped that fish over. At that point I knew he was going home.

Also to those commenting about bias towards people. We dont taste the food, the judges do. So if they say Georgia had the best dish than so be it. I dont really care who wins.

However when they played that montage at the end of his past dishes I did forget just how many great desserts he made. When he does open his dessert bar he will be very successful.

    1. Yes viewers don’t get to taste the food that why the way the episode is edited and the judges comments are so important. Say while watching an episode, the direction the episode has taken and the judges comments go one way and the final outcome differs from that of course viewers are going to question what has happened. I have previously commented that I have watched two sunday episodes of masterchef and been perplexed by the final outcome. Look I don’t care who wins nor have I watched every episode of masterchef but I’ve seen enough to know I don’t like watching bias and I don’t like watching a show that seems to have a predetermined outcome before the final episode has aired.

      1. Exactly @tvf. There have been numerous occasions when the judges comments haven’t matched the final outcome, especially when it comes to Georgia. The Press Club challenge was the perfect example.

  4. I thought it was a brilliant tribute to Reynold at the end, noting his fabulous successes. He’s definitely got an incredible future ahead of him as an undisputed master pastry chef. There was a kindness and oodles of good spirit that is totally absent from both MKR and Masterchef US which makes this a real unique show that I continue to love.

  5. Did not realise you had to have a personality to cook well ?shows what this show is really about & did Billie’s long pony still get all over the food we will never go anywhere she is cooking. Yuk

  6. Pity to see Reynold go, he is one talented guy! I am hoping either Billy or Jessica win.

I am not sure if Georgia is favoured by the judges or not, I do think she is a good cook or she wouldn’t still be there, but I don’t think she is more talented than Reynold, Billy or Jessica.

I do think Georgia is definitely favoured by the producers. From earlier on in the series they have constantly focused on her and it nearly always seems to be her doing the narrating. Some contestants you never ever heard boo from, it was like they weren’t even on the show. . I think this constant focus on her and always seeing her talking does put you off and give the impression she is favoured.

    1. Sara got a lot of screen time too. I’m not sure it’s bias, I think the producers just want the intelligent, bubbly ones that are comfortable in front of the camera to do the narrating.

  7. Have not seen any bias towards georgia at all. She has a bubbly personality and is quite funny, so more screen time is given to her, shes entertaining. Billy is coming out of her shell finally, but is still very monotone. Aside from that georgia has put up some great food, billy has the edge with presentation though. I will be happy with any one of the three remaining to win. Best year ever!

  8. I think *if* there is a bias towards Georgia, then the producers have picked the wrong person. I run a bookstore, and I know my customers wouldn’t buy Georgia’s book. But they would have bought Reynold’s or Jessica’s.
In my opinion Georgia is too similar to previous winners, like Julie and Kate. (I’ve still got a pile of Kate’s very boring cookbook that hasn’t sold.)

I actually think Billie will win.

  9. Was considering watching masterchef last night till realised that Georgia was safe. I have nothing against Georgia but if the final outcome of the series is seemingly predetermined than watching the final eps won’t be entertaining. I’m happy to concede that I could be wrong but it just seems to be pointing in that direction and its just a turnoff.

    1. I don’t know what you’re basing this on? Everyone I speak to thinks Billie is the front runner. If you’re suggesting that Georgia is a favourite or a destined winner – I just don’t see this. And it wouldn’t be in the show’s interests. When Sara was eliminated this week, the judges were surprised and indicated that they saw her as a potential winner.

        1. People on ‘social media’ arent really a true judge of what expert judges think. Social media has shown us nothing but the fact that the public can be spoilt (“entitled”) and immature and think they are anonymous hiding behind a moniker to spew vitriol.

Its going to be a great finish to the show and while Georgia does seem the most marketable winner (bubbly, funny and talented – she would surely have a TV series lined up with Channel 10 already) Billie has more potential from a winner point of view to make a huge career if she wins

        2. The ‘thousands’ of you criticising on social media obviously didn’t watch all episodes. At one stage the judges commented that Georgia was falling to the back of the pack. Plus on two occasions I can recall recently the judges gave Reynold advice that saved his dishes. Yes, a healthy dose of scepticism is not a bad thing with reality tv, but you shouldn’t over do it.

      1. Gotta agree with you too – for a while I thought Georgia was a sure thing, but lately Billie is proving she has the skill and the poise to win.

With Reynold gone, its pretty much Billie’s to lose at this point (not that I thought Reynold would win, but he had frightened the remaining contestants lately)

  10. Way to go Ten! Honestly, I’m so glad I’m not a multiscreener. We always watch things a bit late so we can fast-forward through the ads, so I know to stay off social media because I might see stuff. People should feel confident that they won’t see spoilers if they’re watching it live though!

  11. Love how people complain about spoilers by tweeting about said spoiler without a thought for their followers who may have avoided it originally.
